View Full Version : Bumping a post

Hi,

I'm pretty new to the whole business of forum-ing, so I thought I'd better check something out before I do it.

I've noticed that the threads which rise to the top of a page will be the ones that get replied to - which means that they'll probably get more replies ('cos they're more prominently placed), and stay at the top of the page. So it's sometimes the case that a thread can drop off the page if it doesn't get any replies in the 1st day or so.

I mentioned this to the missus who's quite active on a dog breeding forum. On there, it's considered OK to reply to your own post with the word "bump" which raises the thread back up again. I didn't want to just go ahead & do this in case it's not universally accepted as being "polite".

Cheers guys,

John.

Well i can't speak on behalf of the entire staff, only myself on this, but imo, if you posted a song for instance, and it got no replys in a couple of days and had disappeared down the list a page or two, i personally wouldn't see the harm in "bump"ing it back up once, with something like "any feedback welcome" etc.

I think the newer the member, the harder it is to get listens, and once you become a regular in the mp3 forums for instance as a poster and listener, bumping isnt really needed, so then it maybe becomes 'inpolite', and the same if you were bumping a thread that was getting listens.

Outside the mp3 forums though (and with the possible exception of posting in a forum for help of some kind) i don't really think in that situation it's needed, but as stated at the start, this is only my opinion.

I agree with Jamie 100%.... as a "newb" i t may be alright to go ahead and bump once, if you think it just may have dropped off quickly due to other postings, not giving folks a chance to have seen it on the first page. But you will also soon find that the more you comment on others stuff, they will definitely be more inclined to post comments on yours....you scratch mine, i'll scratch yours so to speak!!:)

All depends how it is done. At the end of the day though mate, there is always the rule that you aren't going to please everyone, especially in a forum where text on a computer screen can be taken to mean many different things depending how you choose to read it.

I say go for it, so long as you don't overdo it, the majority won't have the problem.

But, the best way, as already stated, is to comment on other people's stuff, and they will be more inclined to comment on yours.

Certainly, when I was more active in the music forums, this seemed the natural thing to do.

At the moment, I'm not active either way, as a listener or a poster, as other priorities always are getting in the way.

But, just go with the flow, you'll soon pick up the etiquette, not that there is an enforced strict one so to speak. It's pretty relaxed and cool around here.

I work of the same kinda principle to , for those who take the time to listen to my stuff get shown the same respect back , those who just pump there own threads and not bother replying to anyone elses covers etc won't get a listen from me , can't be much fairer then that :devilchil:

thats fair enough for players who are established on the forum and continue not to listen to others just post there own.

But I feel this can form clicks, of which you see alot of on Guitarblast little groups staying together comenting on each others posts not bothering with anyone elses.
i must admit when I havn't had time I have jumped to players I have more dealings with on here and listen and comment, so I'm not pointing fingers.

But it seems that it can get a bit clicky on here which makes it harder for the new guys, instead of welcoming them to the forum your suggesting for them to listen to everyone else first, otherwise they wont get any feedback.
Its the chicken b4 the egg senario.

even tho it is common curtousy to comment on others who have took the time to listen and comment on yours, I think its best to listen and comment to all without prejudice.
theres also alot of genre posting, only listening to things you like rather than stuff your not really into.

I dont blame any person who bumps there post if its being ignored and hasn't had a fair crack of the wip.
I have seen some great posts get ignored simply cos they are new, they dont get half the feeback. yet some are not as good and get loads of posts and 5 stars.
So in my view it depends on who is bumping there post & why.

But thats just an opinion.

stay cool

Well its a very grey area, everyone has the right to reply to any posts including their own, and we all have only a certain amount of time available to spend listening to other folks songs, reading posts etc, and everyone has to strike a balance (if they choose to do so).

I really do like to see people active in posts other then their own, i do agree some only listen to songs they know, or eras they know, i'm sure we're all guilty of that at times, when we see a song we love and straight away have to listen when there are also alot of other songs you could be listening too, but imo, if you're an active poster in the mp3 forums for instance, then its generally good manners to be an active listener too, as you said Bulldog, thats not pointing fingers at anyone, but sometimes there isn't always that listening spirit, even when lots of posts/bumps might be happening within a members own thread.

Its something i hope everyone takes a sencible view of, because new members deserve to get listens to their music, but they also owe it to everyone else to take abit of time to listen to other music posted here, and the same goes for any member posting there imo, new or old.

alas, there is 1 or 2 here that 100% post their own stuff and comment on their own thread with 2% token replies to other posts. :(
i swerve them.

its also hard commenting an a track you hate[the original i mean!] lol
also some genres, which i just cant listen to.

apart from that...tiz a great place!! :headbang:

jim.

Well i tried and listened to everyones covers as much i could at one time mate but at a certain point you soon realize theres just some ppl who pump there own stuff and never listen to anyone elses , i do agree that we should give new members a chance with listening to there stuff as they can never catch up with the back catalogue of covers but once they have posted afew songs they should do the decent thing and start listening to other ppls stuff aswell :)
So personally i give ppl that chance , i will listen to there stuff in good faith with the hope that they become involved in the forum and actively post/listen in the covers/originals section , for those who don't and just keep pumping there own stuff will just be ignored by me :)
Im sorry if it sounds harsh but my patience just runs very low with those kind of ppl , infact i have no time for them whatsoever :chucks:

Sex! :boobies: Oops. Look at me and my dirty mind. :naughty: Awe no, never confuse a b with a p.
One thing for sure, this site is getting to be a bit, well, dull, so to speak. Needs a bit of fresh air, especially on updating new features and the like. Then people move in with a subsequent fresh attitude. Too many old farts in here (speaking of which, we all know when the other one ate beans, so it gets a lil monotonous), plus the new guys stuff it up with their music, and Iīm sure many of them have much more to say, but when you read a bit here and there itīs really hard to find anything new, anything interesting,..whatever. I donīt know, just a thought. Whenever Eric ends his political stuff, hopefully he can update this site a bit.

Seems pretty straightforward to me. As has been said, if a new guy posts, listen, comment and welcome him to the site. If a few weeks and posts later he is ignoring all but his own posts then do what you want, no rule says you have to listen to everything! Though I generally (when I am not MILES behind) try to check most stuff out there are a couple here that I do ignore deliberately.
As for bumping, well it depends. I will bump someone else's post if I feel it did not get a decent outing, and I would bump my own if it got no response, but only once, then I would figure it was crap and try again
I don't think the site is "clicky" as such, yeah there are guys I will check out first as I like their style, or the genre they generally cover, or they are real nice ppl. I don't think that makes me part of a click?
Sign up for the jams, enter the contests, chuck a few comments up, you will get comments back. Its a nice friendly place here with a decent hardcore of regular posters. 'nuff said. :soap:
