hi guys and gals,

recently someone on here mentioned the importance of having peerguardian installed,

you've convinced me of it's importance

sounds like an important program any advice in regards to installation, how to use the list, how to not block you firewall, etc

thanks, always enjoy talking to people here, they are much more knowledgeable about software like this than I am :yourock:

Posting from the chat window stuff I put in there as it is interspersed with other user's comments and I hadn't noticed that this thread was available:

The Peer Guardian 2.0 Version That I Use: PeerGuardian 2.0 Beta 6b

I have added the list: http://www.bluetack.co.uk/config/level1.gz

Because sometimes some of the other lists don't work. Either they don't connect or don't complete. This latter one always works, albeit at a slower rate. So if the others time out or fail to connect, I just leave this latter one to complete.

When Peer Guardian loads up, I click on the Disable button and the Allow HTTP button because sometimes Peerguardian blocks it's own updates.

Then I click on the Check Updates button. I let the downloads complete. If all the other lists complete before the bluetack one that I added, then I abort the download and let the lists generate. If any of the others time out of fail, I allow the bluetack list to complete since it takes a bit longer but never seems to fail. Then I let the lists be regenerated.

Finally, once the lists have been regenerated, I click on the Enable button and Block HTTP button.

Only then do I open up my torrent software and download away.

Just a good i.p. blocker when you're downloading from where you shouldn't.

It does block a lot of stuff though, so don't be surprised if you can't get to certain sites when you have it running if you decide to do some browsing at the same time.

Hope this helps.

Just installed this, and it downloaded the lists etc fine, but when I click on the shortcut it does not open a control panel, just starts another instance of the prog :dunno: Is this normal. or have I got a bad install?

Are you sure that it's not the same instance ?

When it first opens it goes to the taskbar for me. If I then click on the shortcut to the program I get a window opening up as well as the icon in the taskbar. Akin to me right clicking the taskbar icon and selecting PeerGuardian to open it. So it looks like two instances are running.

If I close the new window, then PeerGuardian is staill running, as it is still in the taskbar.

The only way to close it is to right click on the taskbar icon and click exit.

Can you confirm whether this is what is happening to you ?

Task manager shows it running using 13,364(ish)K. I click the shotcut and another one pops up using 688K, but there is no window or taskbar icon :dunno:

Hmm, sounds weird. That is definitely not how mine runs. Did you get it from:

http://phoenixlabs.org/pg2/

And what OS are you running it on ?

I got it from Cnet or similar, one of the big shareware guys anyway. Running Vista as she wont let me take it off and install XP Pro :( Will try that link and see if it makes any difference...

Or maybe not, no Vista support, which is typical :maddance:

It was Softpedia I got it from, says Vista compatible beta with possible bugs ... maybe I will try a different program, there are others available I think

Well from the site where it is from it does not say Vista compatible.

Although the wikipedia link I provided talks about a Vista version beta that works.

I am sure that there are similar programs out there. This is the first I heard about (from Pod God) and so have used it ever since. Haven't looked for others, following the "if it ain't broke, don't fix it" rule.

:Sorry I can't help further, I have only used Vista on a laptop for the first time only yesterday. Hated it. I don't know whether it was a Vista thing or the laptop's touchpad pointer control but it just kept opening everything I hovered the pointer over so in the end I reverted to using keyboard shortcuts as was nearing throwing it out of the window which wouldn't have been advisable given that it was my nephew's 18th birthday present !

There's talk of this one for Vista that is from the same guys that create and maintain the lists for PeerGuardian.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/ProtoWall

I do not know anything about it other than the two searches I hopped through to get to it mate.

So it's up to you whether you give it a bash or not.

will check it out now, does not say Vista compatible, but a couple of forums say that it is ... only one way to find out I guess...

Drivers do not exist for your OS :(

I give in, neither of these will work for me :brickwall: I want XP back :maddance: Will have another search later, maybe someone can suggest an alternative?

Sorry mate. Hopefully Pod God or someone with Vista will jump in on here and help. I really cannot help other than stick two fingers up and say that it works on XP which is neither use nor ornament to you and will result in you driving down the M4 to smack me round the head with a plank !
