Hey guys.

I bought this Mexican Strat with a thing called a Fat-o-caster switch.
Any of you guys know about this mod?

Basically instead of a 5 way switch, you get that plus 19 other combinations. In Series, in parallel, neck and bridge together. It's not my first choice, but it seems to have usable tones.

Yeah i have a similar working on my custom guitar m8, basically it gives you extra options to have diffrent kind of tones , for instance serial is what most guitars run in as standard, Parallel cuts the output of the pickup by half therefore altering its tone slightly for a warmer sound:)
The joint pickups system alot of ppl use to, such as Brian May or Steve Morse, i just have 3 ways personally though, bridge, bridge/neck, neck .
However you can have alot of combinations if you run diffrent pickups in diffrent modes, i have a switch for each pickup so i can turn them in/out of serial/parallel , so with that in mind it can make alot of combinations possbile:)
I did read that Brian May has his pickups running in parallel all the time, which is quite interesting, lol i study alot of electronics in my spare time so i find it fascinating:)

My MIUSA Strat has the same kind of thing but it's called S1 Switching , It does give a lot of options to your sound, it fattens up but you still get the Strat Quack

Thanks for your input guys. I have been tempted with my soldering gun to return it to normal, but with all these possibilities...I sort of like it. At least from a recording perspective.

I prefer the 3 way switch because you can get that cool switching sound that you don't get with the 5 way much less the 19way switch. Listen to Hendrix's "Third Stone From The Sun", that is what I am talking about. -now that is a strat!

they used to have to balance the switch between the different positions to get the 5-switch sound, right?

I agree with you guys about that 3 way switch. I love that Hendrix tone as well as the clean tone on "The Sultans of Swing." Those are two great Strat tones imo. If I could have either of them, my guitar would not need any switch at all.

Leave it alone, Serg. As long as you get the standard Strat neck, bridge and quack, the rest of the possibilities are just an added sonic bonus. Congrats on the purchase :thumb:

Oh, it's a sucky 90-ish looking forum but any and all Fender related questions can and will (or have already been) be answered:
