My recordings are 'lagging' behind...never happened before. I know it's to do with 'latency' but why's it happening and whats causing it? :dunno:

That happened to me with my USB (Audigy?) sound card, it was a huge pain in the ass. I ended up going back to my stock internal card.

I´ve noticed that when you have had your PC on for a long time this happens, also when you record having the sound tracks zoomed up too much and/or redoing-undoing. Both things are really RAM hogs.
Hey Eric, I also have an Audigy, try Asioforall drivers, it sure makes a difference, if you haven´t done it yet.

I don't know what you use Chris, but with Cool Edit and Adobe Audition ( may be similar with others). If you record WITHOUT the "snap to" function activated, what happens is if you don't bump the track your recording back manually(right mouse, drag to the left) it slowly creeps out of time. So when i record, if i have to stop, then redo a part say, i have to bump it back to the left margin manually before starting to record again, otherwise what i just recorded is off a few milliseconds. Maybe your prob...only thing i can think of, if it's something that just started to happen recently!!!

Make sure nothing else is running when you are recording. Stupid little things can hog up your ram. I had this trouble before and I couldn't figure out why it would only happen once in a while. Turns out my email was checking for new mail every 20 min, so when it kicked in.... my recording got screwed up. Now, I always shut everything off.

I'll try and re-install the soundcard and see if that helps. Never happened before...and as I'm recording 'Shine On...' it's a major pain in the ass to keep going back and nudgung everything along. It IS a USB soundcard...Edirol UA-25.

I think ur pc might be using too much ram to run the recording prog itself. sounds like the problem to me. make sure to close as many unused progs before you record.

hMM, i DON'T GET THIS COS IT'S ONLY JUST STARTED AND i HAVEN'T GOT ANYTHING DIFFERENT RUNNING (whoops..caps lock!) I'm gonna re-install and see if that fixes it. At the moment I can jig stuff along slightly to get it in time but it's a chew on. Thanks for the replies. :thumb:

Check the ASIO/WDM buffer size. When that periodically happens to me, I find that certain programs change the setting of it. If you had it at 128 samples, trying bumping it to 512. You should still have very little latency even at 512...about 5-8 milliseconds. Hope this helps.

I changed the buffer size first thing to no avail. I reckon the drivers have had a party and fuct up. I sometimes get 'issues' with the soundcard and POD XT. The soundcard can be happily controlling things but when I switch the POD on, it tries to take over. I'll be re-installing all the sound stuff tomorrow when I'm sober! :boobies:

I would def say it is a RAM issue. I used to record on pc all the time, but the lag at times pissed me off so much that I went bought a Boss Recorder.

I have like 750MB of RAM as well...?

What I do now is lay down all vox and guitar tracks on the Boss then transfer them back to pc via USB

you can then lay them all down in the recording software to edit etc....or just mix and master all on the Boss recorder

I just find I can be more productive this way and spend less time messing with computer issues

That being said I want to pick up one of the new Digitech RP units soon and record onto PC using the USB..I will let you know if I get any latency issues.

Hope you work it out I know these problems can be upsetting and frustrating:yourock:

On that note, I have also experienced what you describe when I switch from one asio driver to another in the same application, say Cubase, then switch back again. Bottom line is this, whenever the asio driver seems to act up, I reset my Firewire 410 and the problem is resolved. It takes 2 seconds to refresh the unit so it isn't exactly time consuming. Hope you sort it out, Chris.

I think it's sorted and I'll tell you why (I think, I haven't tried recording yet.) I removed the Edirol drivers and re-installed. Now when I look at the cover of 'Shine On You Crazy Diamond' I'm working on, where all the samples were moved forward because they were slightly behind, now they are ahead BUT they don't sound out of place...just LOOK out of place!!

I just bought a firewire cable today to capture my dv video stuff...I might use it for my soundcard and see how it works...

I had this problem for months as well Chris, and hopefully, this will have been solved, but for Cool Edit Pro users, enabling this setting keeps things in check for me. The program does do a bit of recalculation after each track, but at least I can record straight through.

Computers are very unpredictable things . I moved a second computer on my wan network to a new location in the house , and swapped over the server option , a straightforward enough task you would think , only when i rebooted my main recording computer , the D drive disappeared :headscratch: . It took me three hours of doing fault checking only for it to appear again :headscratch:
