View Full Version : Delta Slide
Here is my Delta Slide tune.
I have something in the works with this song. I'll be playing a pretty big show coming up in August. I plan on video taping the performance.
I already did the audition using this song - people were shaking my hand as I walked out. Thats a good sign.
So here it is!

This is freakin sweet ! has a natural rhythm and drive to it , that can be really hard to achieve but i think you did a great job . I had a couple of questions if thats cool as i'm fascinated by slide at the moment but have no clue about it lol ....
What finger do you use your slide on ? and do you have your guitar setup any differently ?
Thanks mate great playing :thumb:

Thanks Stingx.
I played this on my Fender F-210 acoustic - tuned to Open G - with a chrome slide.
To tell the truth it was recorded very simply - off a desktop mic - a Labtech AM-242 directly into my PC. (Soundblaster Live audio card) Then I added a little reverb with Cooledit.
I did this track many moons ago.

Glad you dug it Linda!
Hopefully people at this big show I will be playing at will think so too :thumb:

Thanks a lot Stig - really appreciate it man. (All of you really! Thanks for the listen)
Ask me anything man - I have the slide on my pinky finger. Players like Bonnie Rait use other fingers. But I don't like that style, because sometimes I fret notes too. So I like having the other 3 fingers to do that.
Like for the song "Tush" by ZZ Top - you couldn't play the song WITHOUT having the slide on your pinky finger. (A lot of other songs too)
My acoustic isn't modified at all - completely stock. The strings are at a perfect height for slide playing. All I did was tune it to Open G.
But if I wanted to play slide on an electric - then I would for sure raise the string height - pretty much have to.
When I played in the band - I would have a spare guitar already setup for slide - so I could just grab it and go.
If your interested in playing the slide - I would be happy to help anyway I could Stig.
Put the slide on whatever finger feels good for ya - tune to an Open Chord and experiment with it. Just remember to Mute the strings BEHIND the slide - otherwise it sounds like crap.
I plan on video taping me playing this at the next show I do in August. I will of course upload it here for all to throw their tomato's at it.
Thanks again everyone :D

Thanks heaps PJ !
I'd tried a little bit of slide a while ago , my only real reference was mark knopfler who played slide with his pinky finger on the rare times he actually played slide lol . So i was pretty much in the dark and was glad to hear you use your pinky as well cause it seems you only see most people with it on one of their main fingers .
I didn't know about the muting of the strings behind the slide so thanks for the tip . i think i'm just gonna have to dive in and experiment , should be some good fun ! thanks !

Did you get the job mate ?:D
Yes I did!
Just got the letter in the mail!
August 27th I'll be playing this song. Wish me luck - I really want to make it to the finals. Thats all I want. .
I'll post the video after the show. .
I would just love to tell you all where and what it is I'm doing - but I'm sort of afraid to. There is a certain person who likes to shred axes that I'm nervous about. I'm sure that person would love nothing better than to ruin my chances of success in this show.
So for safety's sake, I will wait until it's done to let you all in on the details.

Thanks Jim!
Any help you need on slide just hit me up!

Hey Paul.. You know I dig this by now :)
It actually made me go out and buy a slide. I think I went too far. it is a heavy ass brass thing and I sound like shit with it :) I went for the biggest one on the shop and I probably should have gotten a 1/2 size glass one thinking about it. Nevertheless - it reminded me just how good you were so killer props to you mate :thumb:

I've got one of them thick heavy brass ones too... You get a pretty mean sound if your strings are heavy enough :D
Unfortunately they arent so I use my thin brass one instead :p

I know this is an old message, but you actually went out and bought a slide eh Ports?
To heavy you say? I never use the brass ones - I only use the chrome slides. I think they sound better than glass or brass. But it's all subjective.
You sound like shit with it?!?! Heheh it can't be that bad! What are you having trouble with? Are you muting the strings behind the slide with a finger?

I'm used to brass myself. Just didn't like anything else.

Yeah I guess I'm just used to the chrome ones.
Glass sounds kinda dull to me. Not enough brightness in the sound.
And the brass slides are just too damn heavy for me.
