Feel like humbling yourself???
Check out this 35 minute sampler of solo guitarists.

http://video.google.co.uk/videoplay?docid=-8932252285542129021&q=TRIBUTE+to+SRV (http://video.google.co.uk/videoplay?docid=-8932252285542129021&q=TRIBUTE+to+SRV)

There are an ass-load of amazing guitarists out there these days.
I have heard of only a fraction of these guys, but they all could be famous.

Make sure you watch the last 3 minutes for some amazing ukelele playing!!!

Is it ok that i still feel pretty good about my own playing ?.... These guys are good and all but... i dunno... doesn't blow your mind. I suppose after you reach a certain point it becomes pretty difficult to be impressed by guitar players cause you've kinda see nit all. Wether or not you can do it all is irrelevant... you've seen it all. But yeah... i can see how many of these chaps may impress ya. Good bunch of players... not enough to make me feel humbled though if i may be bold enough to say.

No, that's fine...I expected you probably wouldn't be. I think the point that was impressed upon me here was that there are a whole lot of really fantastic players out there which makes it really hard to stand out from the crowd. You can be a great player with lots of well polished chops and technique, but does your playing stand out from the crowd as being unique or distinguishable from the rest? To me, personally, that is the ultimate goal. And in that sense, I was humbled. And besides, as bold as you may be, I know that you cannot play the ukelele half as good as that guy at the end. :D

... indeed duder. And how i DO regret it. If only i could pick up a ukelaloid and really ROCK the wolds nuts off. ;). I hear what you are saying though dude. My problem is, funnily enough, im not a huge guitar nut type. I dont like mega technical guitarists that much. I like certain ways to use the guitar and stuff, like a beautiful cascade of notes ending in a nice bend etc, the flow of it all. But playing insane arps or playing crazy tapping and sounding like a robot that only other technical players can appreciate just doesnt seem to interest me whatsoever. Wonderful players for sure. With some crazy styles and abilities... problem with all that is... the "crowd" for that whole "genre" is one that nobody other than crazy guitary types really give a shit about. Most of us on these boards have seen it all before. Some guys come along and theyre awesome on guitar. But does it honestly linger in your memory as much or as sweetly as a kick ass song ?. Not really... for me anyway.

Great stuff. Eklunde, Lee Firkins and a coupla others already are quite famous. Check out Eklunde's band Freak Kitchen.

Check out Eklunde's band Freak Kitchen.I THOUGHT that was him. I had downloaded the song "Sob Story" from one of your recommended band links at G101 and I listen to it often. I did not know the name of the guitarist from the band but distinctively recognized the tone/sound/style from him in this video. I was a little disappointed with the particular clip of Michael Lee Firkins. I am not familiar with any of his music, but I assume he has much better stuff from all the positive reviews I read about him. I just didn't care for that overly fuzzy/bassy tone. It was an interesting style though.

One of my faves from this montage is the guy who played "Just the Two of Us" (I think it was around the 12 minute mark or so) using the double neck guitar, played almost like a piano. Pretty cool sound and style.

Michael Lee Firkin's main claim to fame was he was able to make the guitar sound like a lapsteel with just the tremelo arm. He's very Jeff Beck in approach but if I was going to suggest a track that said it all about him, it would the 'The Sargasso Sea' from his first album released about 1990. If you want a copy e-mailing, let me know.

It is unfortunate that many Shredders miss the original point of shredding. The Blackmore/Uli Roth/Yngwie/Vai school of shred was/is expressive and full of passion. Plenty fire and soul and feel. But soooo many totally miss the point of it and just think its about playing as many notes as possible as quick as possible.

Lets not overlook things though. Shred isnt a souless genre or style. It's just misinterpreted by MANY players since it first became mainstream. I mean hell.... do you look at a classical pianist playing a fast passage of notes and think "god... it's so souless" ... nope.

Dissing shred is sadly often a sign of a combination of ignorance and jealousy... harsh words perhaps... but i think true ones deep deep down. If we all cared to admit it.

But indeed... the majority of shred types do miss the point. And i don't enjoy them at all. But it ain't all souless... lets remember that.

HOORAH!!!

I'm watching movie number 1 in that series now... (http://video.google.co.uk/videoplay?docid=-7370023627894437872), and there's this video of Guthrie Govan doing "Rhode Island Shred".

Did you see that one Dannyboy? haha, holy crap. The way he's just all over the neck all the time, and it sounds lovely too :thumb:
Would love to hear him go crazy on an acoustic.

well........A few good players here.........but I wouldnt say that it humbles me. Ive seen 1000 dudes like these. Ill tell you who humbles me tho......Vai, Ender......the dude frickin rocks.....Mr Tang lol.....Becker.....Yngwie...... Im not sure of explaining what i mean. I think Danny said it pretty well tho.

Guthrie Owns for sure Naif. Ive admired his playing alot since Phil28uk or Chris Watson introduced us all to him back on 101. Very good player, Effortless and uber talented. He's from the GOOD school of shred. Tasteful cascade of notes with delicious vibrato and superbly intonated bends.

It does come accross somewhat arrogant of me and of Eden to say "it doesnt humble me"... but what we mean when we say that is... it's not "whoa look at that"... because we had that years ago when we first heard Yngwie or Becker or Gilbert or Friedman. The initial wow factor of shred is gone. And it soon becomes about Shred WITH feel and taste. Which only a select few have... THAT is why it doesn't "humble" us.

But indeed. A fine lineup of players... shame many of them totally miss the bullseye with what theyre trying to do with shred. Cause no matter how many notes you play in one second theres always some dumbass who does it quicker and cleaner. Pointless excersize of fret masturbation. Gimme Yngwie or Vai or Guthrie anyday over those dudes.

seen stuff like this before, but coming up with it is kinda impressive. the technique is good too, but becomes vanilla after a while. dazzle me with music and technique, then you got a devoted listener.:D

I think the issue lies in this.......Shred guitar......whatever you wanna call it.....has become very mainstreem in a way. it doesnt impress many people anymore.....cause you hear one guy and say wow hes great and then the next the day you hear another guy and say wow this dude is even better. it goes on and on and on. I think shred guitar.....well has been really OVER done. I remember thinkin to myself 6 yrs ago when i started playing seriously.....i was like man i wanna shred like crazy.... i wanna be the fastest dude there is. I heard Michael Angelo and was like wow this dude is amazing......then i started hearing stuff like Vai, Becker, Friedman. and i was like holy shit...this is way better. its got taste. I dunno hard for me to explain.

I think the real issue is this :

Music is subjective . What you don't like or find boring, other people like . Guys like michael angelo and others are making their living off this so there must be some people who keep them in business .

Threads like this kinda piss me off because it's the same opinions expressed over and over ... " I like tasteful music " "It's so souless" I think by now everyone knows this!

That's all well and good Stig. And i agree with you. But what i have learned by now is that you can't prevent people from wanting to express their opinion no matter how often you try to preach/teach the diplomatic routine. People wanna get their opinion accross. And nothing is gonna stop em. Even if we all realised the truths you just expressed here (which infact 95% of us do), it wouldn't stop us. We wanna talk, that's what the forums are all about at the end of the day.

Thats the conclusion i have come to anyway. Everybody wants to speak their mind and express their view no matter how contraversial or how ill-informed. It's what makes us unique as people... the bottom line is, it isnt causing friction here. At all... it's all very very friendly and civilized on this site. And i think its great. I think many of us learned some lessons on G101 and find this site a fresh beginning to "have another go". Which is cool.

But yeah. i do agree with you. As most of us will... but it won't stop anyone wanting to talk. So please don't let it piddle you off. Cause frankly theres really nothing to get pissy about anymore... people believe whatever they want to believe. Deep down we all know the real truth........ and that truth is.... im right and you should all acknowledge that fact :) LOLOLOLOL

haha , yeah i know .. I didn't really mean it to come out as harsh as it did , Truth is as long as people write their opinion i'll read it even if i don't like it . lol so it's really my fault. i could always click that little x at the top of the screen.

I just get a little irritated sometimes when things become repetitive (ironically like the shred we're talking about) hehe so don't mind me when i get out of bed on the wrong side hehe

Well, I think some are kind of missing part of the point of this thread. Too much focus of discussion has been on the shredders in this video compilation. No one has mentioned the other guys who aren't so much shredding, like the guy who played "Just the Two of Us" on the double-neck guitar, playing it like a piano...or the Ukelele player at the end. This thread wasn't supposed to be about shredders, but mainly just an entertaining compilation of all the great players that are out there. Maybe the focus could stand to shift to who stands out from the crowd rather than who sounds the same as others. My opening line about humbling yourself wasn't supposed to be about "you should feel less good about yourself if you cannot play as fast as the fastest guys in this compilation." I was hoping to point out that there are a lot of talented players out there, with a number of varying styles, and that can make it hard to stand out from the crowd. And that humbles me.

Hey dude, this aint g101. Everyone has the right to give their opinion. If you dont like this type of topic.....dont reply. If these type of threads piss you off......dont read em. Dont take ur anger out cause people here are vocing their opinion. 1 reason i dont go to G101. you cant voice ur own opinion without getting stomped on.

I don't think we need this to be honest bro. It's been sorted instantly and everything is cool. Im pretty sure Stig sees that GB is a more relaxed place. So let's not cause tension out of nothing. I know you just wanna make that clear as I do... but that may not be quite the way of doing it.
