I'm looking to get away from line recording and start using a microphone. The problem is I'm brand new at this and I don't really know what equipment I should get to compliment the gear I already have. I currently use a Marshall JCM2000 DSL 50 watt, a 4x12 Mesa-Boogie cab, Boss gt-6 effects pedal, and M-Audio Audiophile for digital recording into my computer.

Can someone suggest a good brand of mic, mic preamp, mic stand, and so on at good quality, but affordable prices? Thanks, I'm trying to get the most out of my money on this one.

Also, how terrible would it be to run the microphone through the Boss gt-6 and record it that way or is it really worth buying a good preamp for it?

Thanks everyone.

sure sm-57 is the way to go...ive been using one for years and get many good comments on tone....its considered the best it exact replication of what your hearing out of your amp....i will vouch for that claim but also i record through a standard soundcard / no preamp...and it still kicks...good luck

I definitely agree about the SM-57. You can make deals where they cost about $80. I also recommend the Behringer UB802 as a preamp (approx $45). I use the model MX602A, but it is no longer made. A mic stand I use is an OnStage MS7920B (about $20).
I use them for guitars and vocals. Should cost in total right under $150 (that does not include all the cables you will need - XLR, and connections to your soundcard). That's what I use and I am completely happy...whatever you do...do not go condenser mic for a first time user. They are ultra sensitive and will pick up small animals mating from 50 yrds. :)

Great! Some good advice here already! I've heard the SM-57 was one hell of a great mic, but its great to hear that from two of the best recording artists on the forum, so that's definitely the way to go then. Thank you fellas, and thanks for the info about a good preamp and mic stand, 3fingers. And yeah, I will definitely stay away from condenser mics for now...haha!

Shure Beta 57A. All the benefits of the 57 but even better for doing vocals too.
