I use a laptop for some mobile recording and also for surfing the web and such. But the processor is not really ideal so I have some audio dropout and it makes it tough to play a few tracks and record guitar at the same time. I find if I shut down as many background programs as I can it seems to help. I was wondering if anyone uses different accounts in XP. What I was thinking was to have an account set up just as a DAW and only the related programs would start and not the anti-virus, anti-spy etc...etc...etc. Is anyone doing this or I'm thinking about this wrong?

The best thing is to disable the multiuser feature. When running it takes up system memory. Do a google search for "tweaking XP for recording" or something to that effect. There are a plenty of excellent sites for XP tweaks to use as a DAW.

Yeah I've done all the tweaks but still have some audio drop. Just to see I tried making another account and when switching between the two I see that programs are running under each user, so I see what you mean. And that it is using more memory. Anyway I just thought that might be my answer. Thanks

The audio drop is due to latency, most likely. What hardware are you using for the interface? If you are using a SB or knockoff, grab the ASIO4ALL drivers. If you have a USB or Firewire interface, update to the latest drivers and also get the drivers from the hardware's utility menue to use a sample rate of 44100 and set the ASIO buffer size to 512. That should yield good results.

I've just got studdering audio in general. Cracks/Pops with audio playback. I've been living with it for a while but I'm now sick of it and am determined to find a solution.
It doesn't matter which program I am running Cubase SX3, FL Studio 7, Reason 3 or even iTunes, Windows Media Player etc. I still get crackles with audio playback.
I know when running Cubase SX3, and when running about 10-12 tracks I'm only using about 35 -40% CPU, so I don't think it's that. If I switch to my internal sound card and listen through the built in speakers I have no glitches at all. But thru my interface and my monitors, no matter what I try I can't make it work. It really makes it hard to have a backing going and record the guitar to it in time.
I am using the Tascam US-428 for my interface connected thru usb. I probably need to just scrap it and just get something better, but I am now just determined to get this solved.
I have been doing some searching and now think it is a USB IRQ conflict or something. I've got the interface connected to a native usb port on my laptop along with a usb keyboard(the keyboard was a recent addition and the glitches were way before that). Then I have a external USB 2.0 hard drive connected thru a pcmcia card.
I've tried all the XP tweaks. I turn off all my virus stuff. I disable my wireless internet card. I turn off all none essential programs to no avail. I've tried the generic drivers avaliable ie Asio4all and it seemed only to get worse not better. There are no more updated drivers from Tascam since they don't make this interface anymore.
Anyway I just ranting now. Maybe someone else has been thru all this and can help me out or I my just be in the market for a new DAW.
Thanks
