i recently bought a isolation cab called a axetrak, which is basicly a small speaker and a custom mic built into a sealed unit, the idea behind it is you can crank your amp head straight into it (upto 75 watts rms) and it has a xlr output which goes straight into your soundcard. with your amp cranked the sound leakage is very low (lower than an average conversation) so you could crank your amp at home at night without pissing off the neighbours. it sounds realy good i compared it to miking up my 4/12 cab and it was almost identical but slightly not as rich but for a 6 inch speaker its a lot better than i expected. so you can hear what it sounds like heres a little clip of my carvin legacy head cranked through it. and if anybodys intrested heres a link to their site http://www.jlhproducts.com/axetrak/

Clever little box that. I wanna buy an Orange head and this might just be what I might get to go with it.
Nice trem flutters by the way.

That short thingy sounds great. But do you really think it´s worthwhile? After all, what you listen on the web is a whole bunch of ones and zeros thrown in a compressed mp3 file. Modellers nowadays fool anyone, not to mention post production on whatever program. I think real amps are for what they were meant to be, playing live.

im not slaggin off moddlers i like them and use them a lot. but i do strongly dissagree with everthing you just said reguarding real amps but i wont go into the details as these kind of dicussions usaly end in arguments. both moddlers and amps are great recording tools and both have their uses:thumb:

Well, Iīm sorry if it sounded a bit harsh. I hate arguments as well. I guess I should keep my mouth shut on this subject, since I really have no experience with amp recording. In fact I like the hiss I listen to on some of what Iīve heard before. When I typed that last night I was just thinking on how everything we listen after all are mostly mp3s. Compressed files use something called Fast Fourier Transformation, which basically is a way to emulate sine waves after sampling a lot of points. Something similar to interpolation, but done with trigonometric functions. So after all, you never listen to the real thing.

:wtf: ahh no wonder my recordings sound shitty!
using a podxt in my case just means zero disturbance for the rest of the house.
and that was some serious tasty playing in that clip chris. :woot:

Cool stuff Chris! Modellers have their place for sure but it's apples and oranges from real recorded guitar tone in most cases (yes, even in MP3 form). What kind of price is on that unit?? I went with the Randall isolation w/ a single Celestion V30 and I love it! I had a Line 6 Vetta for over 4 years and nothing was easier to record with, but the tones weren't the greatest. It is cool to see other options.

it was never my intention to start a moddler verses amp thread but you seem to want that you have said many things that are just untrue, yes you can hear the diffrence in any formatt mp3 included i dont know why you seem so argumentative on the subject its not like i started a thread saying hey moddlers are crap, as ive said i use them a lot the diff in sound with modler and amp is huge and if you cant hear it thats fine but try not to say things that are not true, i record bands for a living in my own pro studio complex about 200 bands a year. to say real amps should just be used for live work is a ridiculous statement to make, and as you said in your own words (quote, since I really have no experience with amp recording unquote) you have big opinions on things you know nothing about, i dont realy come on g blast often because of all the silly squabbling that seems to happen a lot here. and now its got to the stage where i cant even make a thread for people who maybe intrested in a iso cab and maybe havent heard one in action without someone trying to stir things up:dunno: ive had it with forums it time for me to move on

Ouch, take it easy man, I already typed what I think about the subject, with no intention of heating up any stupid nonsense kiddiesh argument. I donīt play a shit on guitar, I only come to this site on weekends for chilling out, you are a kick ass player, itīs your job, mine deals with numbers. I beg you pardon yet again. Jeeze, what a crappy and primitive way of communication a keyboard is. Still fun though. :)

These isolation cabs are a cool idea for home recording, but it's maybe still not quite the same as recording with amps in the studio?? While you might be using your favorite amp head, what you're recording is the characteristics of the speaker in the isolation cab, which could sound dramatically different than your favorite speaker cabinet?? I'm just wondering if you might get some results that don't quite match up with what you get from playing or recording through a live amp.

While I can't comment on the one Chris is using but I run my Splawn thru 2 Mesa cabs live. When I first got my amp I was recording it thru my 2X12 cab which is loaded with Celestion V30's the same speaker that's in my Randall Iso cab. My point is I do get the same tone thru my Randall as my live sound thru the Mesa. I don't even change my amp settings when I record. If you're a fan of far away micing and the sound it produces then that would possibly be an issue for you. I like to close mic, myself. Usually around 3 inches away from the speaker. Just some info for ya. :thumb:
BTW these Iso cabs are gaining alot of popularity for LIVE use as well. Like people use some modellers direct to the sound board without any live sound from a cab, then run the guitar thru the house PA and monitors. The jazz guys love 'em.

Wow, your recording sounds really sweet. I may have to look into one of them one day. I couldn't tell that it was only a 6" speaker either. Contrary to popular opinion, you can definitely get huge sounds out of small speakers. Thanks for posting this.
BTW, I read through some of the amp vs modeler debate. I think it's really safe to say that if you are going after the MOST authentic sounding recording, you gotta mic an amp. Not to say that you can't do it very well on a modeler, I've heard some absolutely amazing stuff done that way...better than I can do with a mic for sure, but that's usually because they are just better players/recording artists than I am.
Given the choice, I'd have to go with a mic every time. That's the way all my guitar heroes did it, so that's what I try to do as well when going after their sounds.
There, I said my piece on that ;)
