Well after dying and coming back to life the Maxtor 120 has passed away albiet giving me a bit of a panic first . I had spent the best part of 6 sweaty frustrating hours clawing through a piece of original music for a current project .
The hard drive ( my data drive ) had been acting odd , sometimes windows never picked it up , but after a reboot it did :headscratch: , however i soon become used to this hit and miss affair , as once i started using it , it worked a treat .
Now after each session i normally make an identical copy on my C drive , just in case . But on this occasion i forget to back up , and midway through recording the drive snuffed it big time , leaving me minus those 5 odd minutes of music .
May not sound much , but those 5 minutes were hard to get , the day had been troublesome ,i fought through thick and thin , i worked like a proverbial to get them , and i wanted them back !
So with one dead D drive my only option was to pray to god , and reboot over and over again , i did a bios check and it read the drive as a LAXTRM 129 ?,
After what seemed like an eternity it thankfully kicked in , and i saved my beloved data :) .
The drive has now sunk , so please guys , take a tip from me , if you ever get a drive which suddenly dont appear , then does , GET RID !!

Yeah i remember the first Maxtor Hd i had with the first pc i built, bloodyhell they are sodding pain in the arse , it started pissing about and in the end it died out , it just corrupted the whole drive:mad1:
I can't remember which hd i bought afterwards although thats been pretty decent , but i bought a 320gb Maxtor hd alittle while back , touch wood its been fine so far, hopefully it won't display the same kind of problems you have suffered with , cos theres nothing worse then loosing alot of hard spent time and work :brickwall:
Glad you managed to retrieve all that you thought you had lost , i would look into getting a new hd to be on the safe side though lol :toothless:

I lost about 15 songs on an IBM HDD back in 2004. Had 2 Samsungs die. A Western Digital too. Oh and 1 maxtor. It is always worth backing up your data. And it really doesn't matter what make of drive it is - it happens to them all.

Kind of funny, But my main laptop DAW is going away right now. All my data is safe on an external drive but my main drive is on its way out. I am seeing an error that reads S.M.A.R.T. detects imminent hard drive failure. It still will boot up at this point, and I am trying to get a fresh backup but it keeps crashing. I went to a computer place and they told me that its most likely due to heat. And that laptops aren't designed to sit and run all the time, because they just don't have enough air flow to keep them cool. They suggested picking up a cooling pad that has fans in it that the laptop sits on. So anyway I'm going for a new harddrive this weekend along with that stand. I am dreading the thought of reloading the OS and all my programs though. If anyone knows how I might clone the old drive to the new one let me know!

Yeah, gotta agree with Porty. It doesn't matter what the make is, some will go.
I've found mirroring disks gives me much more piece of mind, but there's nothing to stop them both going at the same time, but it is just less likely.
I've got a USB pen drive and a USB external drive as well though and I put important stuff on there too.
But I'm more than happy using RAID (mirroring). Yup, you only get half the capacity, but it's a lot nicer knowing that both drives have to fail at the same time in order for you to lose all of your data.
Of course, this is no help to people like bluesplayer who have lost a drive, but remember, prevention is better than cure, and if My Dad had followed that advice, you wouldn't have had to read this dribble from me !

try http://www.almico.com/speedfan.php - and use the HDD analysis. a cooling pad is a great idea. I also know of a few friends that swear that putting the drive in a plastic bag and putting it in the freezer also gives it a few more minutes if it gets to the seizing up stage. Good luck.

Is There a way to take a program installed on your computer back down to an installer file? I am realizing that I didn't save all the installer files of my programs. Makes it hard to transfer a program to another hard drive:confused:

What would happen if I took a copy of say, the steinberg program file, from the old drive and then reinstalled Cubase on the new drive and replaced the program file from the new install with the copy from the old drive. Would I retain all my old settings and VST's and such or would it just not work?

Tough shit. I recently made an image copy from a beaten hard drive to a new one on a pc at work, everything seemed to work out more or less. But after a few weeks I just had to reinstall everything.

Aye, I have done something similar recently. Changed the motherboard on a working p.c. Kept the same hard drive and everything.
Windows XP definitely needs re-installing, but I am making sure I make a note of everything that I use first so that I make sure that I get the fresh install done as cleanly and trouble free as possible.
