I might do a smaller (more coherent) version and see if eric will embed it later. I kind of like EZD at the moment, mainly because of the humanise function. This actually works on my own midi drums and not just the grooves (like BFD.) I also think Battery 3 is wonderful - some of the built in effects are brilliant.

I used ezdrummer for this because it is popular at the moment.

I'm having trouble downloading for some reason...maybe the website is having problems.

yeah it does seem to be playing up a little. hopefully its just a glitch in the site as others have already managed to download it.

I will up it again if the site doesn't improve..

Yup, still having problems. You may want to try Sendspace.com. It's a good one.

Thanks mate! Finally got to watch this video and it was very informative. I have EZDrummer, but so far I've basically only been plugging in premade midi files. It's about time I learned to do it myself. I also love the humanizing function...most realistic drums sounds you can get. So far, I don't think any program I've used including Battery 3 can beat it.

By the way, love the British accent....haha, we Americans get a kick out of hearing that. :toothless:

This is acutally a very comprehensive tutotrial, thanks for putting this together for us. It's tempting me to dust off and jump back in to creating tracks again. So this also requires cubase as well?

goport
07-30-2007, 09:59 AM
Yep - cubase as well or any other midi package will do a similar job :)

I agree. You are a funny chap Lawrence, by the way. I don't usually have tea like you gents across the pond, but I may enjoy a soda instead while the samples are loading. :p And your introductory title graphics were cutting edge! Your accent isn't near as thick as some other English folks I've come across. I had to watch episodes of "The Office" at least twice to catch all the dialog. :toothless: But I understand every word you say.

...It's tempting me to dust off and jump back in to creating tracks again. Whoooaa! That's quite a compliment there Porty. We haven't heard anything from our fearless leader in what seems like ages (I think the last post Eric has made was Passage to Bangkok when he was testing the upload functionality when this site first launched  ). I hope you do get back in the game on a few projects, Eric. It would be great to see you utilize the resources of this site that you launched. :thumb:

Anyway, I have watched this vid a couple times over now and I am pooping my pants with excitement, as the mysteries that have been holding me back in this area may well be solved. I will give this a go tonight when I get home from work. Thanks big time for putting this together.

Aye - it would be nice to think that Eric might dust off the old guitar and spring some new stuff here :) - come on boss!!

I really hope this helps people to take the first step into diy drums. And hopefully it is easy ish to understand - now I have the software I might do another tutorial later on if this one goes down well.

Glad you liked my intro credits - but don't be stealing my cutting edge techniques ok mate? :)

Well, you know first hand the timing issues I have always had when it came to my manual drum tracks on a keyboard. This is a great solution but I never took the time to learn how to make drum tracks this way. This helps a ton.

Finally got a chance to check this out. Great stuff Porty. A very good overview. I picked up a few good pointers that I hope to put to use very soon:yourock:
It's been a while since I used Cubase but it's basically the same in Sonar:thumb:
One great feature of EZDrummer that wasn't mentioned is the grooves which make it even easier to put drum tracks together by simply dragging and dropping midi loops. This flash demonstration (http://www.toontrack.com/EZdrummer_flashtutorial.asp) shows what I mean(click on The Groove Library).

I should point out that the mapping for EZDrummer is a bit different if you use the grooves. I have the drum maps for Sonar/Cubase/ etc for EZD if anybody is interested.

A five star thread Porty... and if Eric posts something I'll have to give ya fifty:)

Nicely done m8 :)

Explained really well.

There is no doubt the sequenced drum track sounds alot better than it use to, and when time is spent on changing and randomising the velocity settings and other settings you can get a real cool sounding drum track.

Its always been the fills in drum sequencing that really can sound mechanical, rolls are very difficult, accenting stick work is impossible with a sequencer.
but saying that they have come along way over the last 10 years.

This is a cool video m8, well excecuted and explained, great post m8.

Thank You, Thank You, Thank You!!!!! This is fantastic, Lawrence!!! Although, being the computer illiterate that I am, I'll have to watch this SEVERAL times!!!

One question tho...you mention a midi keyboard controller but, all I saw was you using your mouse. Do I need a midi keyboard?

:yourock: :yourock:

goport
07-30-2007, 12:30 PM
no not at all - I used the synth and also used the mouse. some people will prefer using the keyboard to "visualise" the timing. If you watch again - I input the first 2 bars using the mouse and the 3rd and 4th using the keyboard controller. I also did the high hat pattern using the keyboard and finished it off using the mouse.

For what it is worth Bluesplayer and I both tend to drop the notes in only by using the mouse (at least I think BP does). this way you are more in control of what you do.

The reason I dsecided on using a keyboard was because it is sometimes easier to tap out a rhythm than program it.

I will do another one if you like solely using the mouse?

Just looked into this software, a cool piece of kit, excellent, the kits alone will add to my V-Drums and give them even more scope, and its cheaper than BFD.

Excellent piece of kit.

I couldn't agree more! I thought I had posted my thanks for this vid way back and am embarrased to admit that I can't find where I did....purely unintentional, I assure you. THANKYOU GOPORT!!!!
[I'm bitch slappin' my self right now... :bitchslap:].

This vid was most helpful and let me progress quickly in building my own backing tracks, and understanding how Ez Dummer & Cubase works. I'd fiddled with it before, but never got the results I wanted, kept going back to soundfonts. After watching the vid, it was like the clouds parted and the sun came out...BIG LIGHT BULB WENT OFF OVER MY HEAD. Even my wife saw it :woot:
