do you tell if a jalepeno pepper is ripe? I picked a couple of mine. They were green and looked like peppers...chopped them up and cooked with them. Tasted like green peppers. So I ate one (and yes, I do that) and it tasted like...a green pepper.

I was bitching about this at work and one of the guys was like, "Is it ripe?" I said, "Fuck, I don't know...how do you tell?" He didn't know either.

So mondola maybe?...How can I tell if I should pick them or not? :dunno: :headscratch:

I dunno dude. I have the same problem. I have a jalepeno plant with dozens of peppers on there, but no indication that they are ripe.

With the other plants, it's a piece of piss. The peppers turn a nice glossy red and then they get picked and put in a chilli.

I was going to google it or e-mail the guy I got the seeds from to find out how to determine if they are ripe or not.

To tell if a green Jalapeno is ready is really pretty simple, you look for what is called "CORKING". Corking is a blemish on the skin of the fruit. It looks like lines or cracks on the surface of the fruit, much like natural cork. If the fruit is till shinny and smooth, it is not ready. Of course when it starts too. or turns bright red, it is very ripe and you should pick it right away as it will over ripen quickly and spoil if left on the plant.

There are two times when I harvest. If I want green jalapenos at their peak I start picking them when they start to "cork"(brown light surface cracks) otherwise I let jalapenos ripen red since I prefer the sweeter flavor of a red ripe jalapeno which also lacks the "green" flavor. The only down side to picking red jalapenos is that they take forever to ripen.

Jalapeno: Start picking when they become a deep, dark green and are full-sized according to the variety description. Most are around 3 inches long at maturity. Some varieties display corking starting at early maturity and that's a great indicator that they're ready to pick for pickling. Ripening jalapenos will cycle from green to darker green, brownish-red or blackish red (depending on variety), then red. Red jalapenos have a wonderfully sweet/hot taste, but are less crisp in texture.

I never get bowel movements after eating jalapeņos. But I do know a friend who prepared a spicy food and then got down to some sweet loving with his missus. He was not very popular, as he had forgotten to wash his hands after handling the peppers.

Ouch. Poor girl !

There was a red one on one of them this morning so I picked it and ate a piece of it. Nothing...no heat at all...I'm getting very discouraged.

Hmmm, strange. There are different brands of jalapeņos though and you could have bought a low scoville rated one. Also, depending on the seller, there are different qualities of seeds.

Additionally, did you grow the jalapeņos near to some other peppers ? Cuz if so, you can get cross pollination and get a hybrid pepper.

Other than that, I can't really suggest anything, apart from the fact that maybe you are just immune to them.
