Obviously burning your own cd’s and making your own cd mixes of tunes is popular but here I mean whole cd’s that play well from song to song and work great on long trips. I’ll get it rolling:

Eagles - Their Greatest Hits 1971-1975: (we do a lot of driving from California to Canada and this cd almost seems made for driving through the western US with the deserts, mountains, forests etc.

Pink Floyd - The Dark Side Of The Moon: A perfect road cd imo.

Led Zeppelin I: Probably biased here as I always had this and Zep II on long road trips/vacations with the family when I was real young so it seems like a good road cd to me.

Led Zeppelin II: (see Led Zep I)

Radiohead - OK Computer: Just another cd that flows excellently from start to finish.

Peter Gabriel - So: I don’t know that this cd flows from song to song like say, Dark Side of the Moon for instance, but the tunes (minus maybe "This Is the Picture [Excellent Birds]"), work great on the road.

I'll go for family friendly here. If it's me, it would be Van Halen I or Van Halen Fair Warning.

However:

Dodgy - Free Peace Sweet
Queen - Greatest Hits II
Bon Jovi - Slippery When Wet
Toploader - Onka's Big Moka
Aerosmith - Big Ones

They seem to go on without complaints whenever we travel.

Good idea

The Shins - Wincing the Night Away. Great CD with a few hints of the Smiths and some wonderful melodies.
Natty Dread - Bob Marley and the Wailers. Classic Marley - the worst song on here is No Woman No Cry (too fast) the rest is really immersive and a joy to listen to.
Otis Blue - Otis Redding. Second LP I ever bought - still sounding pure as anything I own.
Television - Marquee Moon. Just a fantastic guitar lp and superb interplay.
The Buzzcocks - Singles, Going Steady. great pop/punk band with fantastic tunes.

Great subject here. As I am typing while thinking, (or maybe the other way around?), there are three tapes I recorded from original bought records years ago (now burnt to cds, believe it or not I haven´t had a cd on a car until last year) I always stick in the car when I travel.
Pat Metheny´s Letters from home. Beutiful and great to hum over while driving.
Michael Hedges´Live on the double planet. Man, what a joy to listen, absolutely stunning recording, GREAT songs in it.
Keith Jarrett´s Köln concert. That´s a double album, piano solo, one of the best improvisers out there, sides 1 and 3 are stunning.

I definitely second Pat Metheny. Still Life Talking is a great peacefull CD that keeps you entertained.

I would opt for some cool "Party Rock" for a pick me up on long hauls. (like AC DC "Powerage").

Others I would bring would be a variety between those two extremes. Perhaps James Taylor's "Copperline" and Yes "Close to the Edge" and The Beatles "White Album."

+1 on the Pat Metheny Still Life Talking CD. If it's the mountains, I would also add Pat and "One Quiet Night", and "Letter From Home"

For the busy but no traffic city drive, Vai and Satriani do it with my Vai choice of "Passion and Warfare" and Satch's "Super Collosal".

For the long empty I-80 type drive, I'm with Ender and think the Best of the Eagles would work very very well. Jeff Beck's "Guitar Shop" is cool as well.

Fro the maniac stuck in traffic crap, I need to think fun instead of getting pissed off, so Van Halen's "1984". and 1 and 2 get played a lot.

For the long night drive, Vai's "Seventh Song" is very very peaceful.
