Do any of you guys overclock your PC or video cards?
I do both and have done so since the old Celeron 300A.
If you have indulged in this dark art, what was your maximum overclock? (I got 400mhz on a stock cooled Northwood P4 I am using now).

I´ve thought of doing it in the past, but I´m afraid to fry the PC, especially within the heat weather times. As a matter of fact I have had to check the BIOS more than once and set the cooling temperature limits, as the processor was really getting hot sometimes during the summer days. Of course I have my home pc on most of the time for ptp stuff.

I can see the attraction , bit like when i had the two stroke Yamaha , there was a time when it was cool to open up the ports , feed the motor Methanol , and consequently put nice little holes in the pistons , you generally condemned the bike to an early grave , but it was good fun while it lasted , likewise clocking PCS , ive never been tempted because im not wealthy enough to replace broken bits .
Hell im suicidal when things pop as it is , never mind me causing it .
Interesting topic nevertheless .

feed the motor Methanol
:headscratch: sounds like the fuel I stick in for my RC plane 10 cc 2 stroke engine. Course there´s 80 % methanol, 10 % castor oil, and another 10% Nitromethane for the boost . I wonder how many minutes your bike lasted afterwise.....:notme:

Processors have tolerences that can be utilized. They have a lifespan of 7 to 10 years under normal use. If I overclock agressively without good cooling, I can expect perhaps 3 yrs, but a well cooled rig with moderate OC can go 5yrs easy. But I tend to upgrade by then. It's is a fun cult following.

Overclocking can be useful. I haven't done it in years. Processors are powerful enough today that it isn't needed as much... but it was very beneficial back in the day :) There are risks involved, as mentioned, and to me it just isn't worth it anymore:dunno:

I think there is always a case for more speed . Enjoy great boosts by just upgrading your ram , take out that cheap 20 quid slice and simply replace it with proper branded Ram ( Corsair Kingston ), costs considerably more but it will vastly improve things . Then take out your processor , sell it on E-bay and replace it with in fastest your board will allow . I don't think using Sata hard drives is cost effective . Upgrading Graphics is only useful if your a gamer . and i don't recommend ever upgrading the bios , it can all to easy go tits up leaving you suicidal .

I OCed an old Pentium 150 to 200 Mhz. The computer got more and more unstable until I put the jumpers back but it didn't do any good. I think I fried the L2 on the MB. Anyway, I went to AMD after that and they always ran too hot to begin with. I never really bothered after that. I moved to laptops and the AMD64--have a dual core now that I turn down to 800 Mhz most of the time (except when I'm compiling something huge) so why bother OCing.
There are still those that do it, but it seems like a lost art now. Only the seriously geeky do it anymore :p

I`ve been using an amd athalon 2.4 xp mobile chip and have overclocked it to a equivalent 3.2 xp chip using 1 gig of pc400 ram. with decent cooling I have been using this rig now for 2 years with no probs what so ever. It`ll run every game and programme including the very latest stuff!!
