I saw this before, but it didn't come across in the recording I had of the show...

:headscratch:

Aha, I'm talking out of my big fat arse !!!!

I always throught that Greensboro was the opening night of the tour, but it wasn't. It was the second night of the tour. And my recording is from the opening night, which doesn't have this error in it.

So my confusion is now ended.

What a monumental fuck up by both myself and Van Halen.

:D

wow , it's a whole semitone out . the recording is in C# and the guitars are in the regular C . Seems kinda silly that they couldn't adapt though i mean it's just one fret up ! they probably couldn't hear the synth i reckon just sense that something was horribly wrong haha.

Ah poetic justice!!! :toothless: Why didn`t they just stop and Mr Roth cover it with a few jokes? Anything would be better than that shambles!!
I bet Sammy and Mike will howl with delight when they see this!!
moral of the story is...don`t be so tight and get a keyboardist in rather than a sequencer:o

OOPPPPS! That's a bummer,..why didn't Eddie and his son just JUMP UP a key  unless they couldn't hear the keyboard through the monitors or something like that?? Oh well, crap happens to even the big guys,..They still kick ass!!

thats one gnarly version of jump....yeah I am sure someone got chewed out on that one....but what do you do...stop it and start over,....I think they would have been to embarrased to do that....but I think I would have if it was me...and said WTF..somethings not right here...lets try that gaain....seen some acts do that in concert....anbd it takes balls to admit you made a mistake....but at least you arent torturing people with a rendition like that one....lol

Reminds me of a time when i was doing a gig , incidentally on the roughest estate in Britain , Brambles Farm ( STAY AWAY ) . Anyway we used to use a MDF2 Midi data filer , it allowed us to play back midi backing tracks and trigger lights and Keyboards . Well ,,, we had a muppet who operated it and on one song Respect by Erasure he hit the play button as usual but he also hit the tempo button . Sooooo instead of getting a tune at 120 bpm it played at around 170bpm ! , realizing the mistake he tried to slow it down , which was impossible , so we ended up finishing it off at around 60 bpm .

The audience loved it ! .

These mistakes will happen, as for why Eddie didn't jump to the key I would guess it's because Wolfie would have most likely not been able to follow. This is where inexperience will hurt you, no going with a sudden change when Wolfie is probably programmed on the songs.

Sounds like a snapped string to me

 It wouldn't have been any better if they had been in tune.
DLR was murdering the song anyway.

It reminded me of 1980 at Newcastle, Not much has changed.
I think then, it was problems with the generators, and to much Alcohol:lol:

I heard it was 1.5, making it impossible for Eddie to find a fret to make it work...

http://warmowski.wordpress.com/2007/10/05/jump-in-pitch/

"So what happens when you're Van Halen, the last song in your set list is
> the million-seller "Jump" with its synthesizer-keyboard opening and the
> recording you're using to play back the synth is accidentally run at 48K
> instead of 44.1K?
>
> What happens could be this (recorded in Greensboro, NC four days ago):
>
> Can't tell which is funnier, this long-hated cheesebag-anthem turned into
> a
> much more interesting, atonal mess in front of thousands of paying
> customers or the hilarious soldiering on of the Van Halens as they look at
> each other from inside the trainwreck. Eddie tries to transpose on the fly
> and match the wildly fucked up keyboards but the great thing there is the
> difference in pitch is non-musical - about 1.5 semitones sharp. So there's
> no frets he can choose to fix the problem!"

I thought that might have been the case also, nothing you can do there but kick and scream lol.

I agree with what you said about Wolf too though, he wasn't going to keep up in that situation, for 2 reasons... not knowing what Eddie would "try" to compensate... and then if Eddie did actually catch on to it being a pitch issue, not having the effects in his bass rig to manipulate pitch. There might have been some slim chance that Eddie could have some pitch effect tied into his pedal or something. I know I had a patch at one time that controlled pitch, but it was only 1 semitone deep, so more than likely he would still have been up a creek.

I do give credit to Dave though... He really helped keep it from being worse IMO, and made a good choice to sit himself closer to the synths. Live it probably played off to the crowd as a totally different problem and more forgiving then it really was.

I have many issues with VH but can't fault them for technical issues. That's the sort of thing that can fuck anyone up, I bet someone took hell for it though.
