Hey all......some of you know, i have recently started playing in a band, and we're going the heavier edged style 80's to 90's style rock, ya know AIC, STP and the like, as well as some other lighter stuff. Now, i'm not much of a tone guru......i pretty much just plug 'n' play. So i am really trying to get my ears in gear as it were, and would appreciate any helpful critisisms on this tone for this tune. This is using my Carvin DC-127, Pod XT Live, and my bad ears!! LOL!! Let me know what ya think ( not so much the playing or singing, i know i SUCK at those!! LOL!!) Thanks gang, and try to enjoy!!!!:thumb:

Ok mate ... I'm enjoying!

Just a couple of points though ...

The singing style and basic vibe of the song seem to want to be in the "Nickelback" direction ... in which case there could be a little more of a 'grungy', in-yer-face heavily gained geetar sound with less chorus.

However, the chorus (of the song) seems a bit more upbeat, less 'doom-ridden' with some nice chord inversions (even a bit 'o' Zep in there to my ears), wanting a bit less gain and less biting tone to let the musicality sound out.

Overall, sounds good John and different enough to stand on it's own and plough it's own 'middle way', but IMO, the middle way can work against ya if neither camp on either side of the road 'get' it. It may take guts to perservere in that direction ... but I know you got plenty of those anyway!

Personally, I like it and I like your playing (AND voice of course).

Just my $0.02 ... as I 'think' you asked for? ...

Absolutely John mate!! I need to hear what it sounds like to others so as to be able to give it as close to the original flavor as i can....not to mention, my hearing ain't what it used to be, so other ears is a good thing!! LOL!! I will try it backing off on the gain and whatever the other effect is that i have on it at the moment (i believe it may be a chorus or flange) and see where it goes!!! I appreciate your forthrightness mate, thats how we grow eh?!! And i didn't really put anything into the vox at all.....just threw them on there to complete it as a tune.....we have a singer who will be handling that aspect.:yourock:

I can't recall much about this song :) I like it though. The tone sounds fine to me and the playing is great. One thing that sticks out to me is the second chord of the signature riff - there is a voicing in there that I don't remember being so strong. It probably is in the original because its been a while since I last heard it.

The singing is wonderful mate - seriously impressive. great cover!!

Now i don't know the song at all mate, so this is more my general opinion lol, vocals perfect, as always, no faults there at all :)
Guitars are played lovely, as for the tone, i'd argee that there might be to much chorus (but not having heard the original not really my place to comment), but generally i'd be more inclinded to go for two tracks of rhythm guitars 70% - 100% Left and Right, with maybe a tighter sound, less reverb or a less spacious type of reverb, something narrower, I think the level of distortion is nice myself, a good attack and lovely clarity too.
If you're are going to take this kind of setting on stage obvious you can't have two tracks of rhythm (unless you have two guitarists ofcourse), but hopefully something useful in my rabblings lol.
Great work though mate, and best of luck with the band, hope it all go's very well for you :thumb:

Thanks for the input Lawrence and Jamie!! If you listen to the original, at least to my ear, there is a bit of chorus or flange type effect on the overall tone........ and yes Jamie, there are two of us going to be playing guitar, so your thoughts would be right on in that respect!!! We are a full band..... i'll be doing mainly rythms and harmony vox, my bass player and other guitar also sing, and the singer and guitar player both play key's as well, so hopefully we'll be able to cover just about anything we can conjur up. Thanks for the replies fella's!!!! I will put a copy of the original here for you to check out, see how it compares.:yourock:

Im just nipping in and out here to say I thought that was awesome! I love the song and thought that your version was just slightly edgier in tone and not by that much really. However my ears are pants! and your getting advice from the cool dudes anyhow. That rocked!

I love this song!!! That whole first CD is excellent really. You played and sang this perfectly:thumb: Nice job on the tone too. I do wish the guitars were more up front though. I think if you backed off the gain, doubled the track and panned them left and right, you'd see a huge difference. Maybe put the effects on one side only to help seperate the guitars a bit. The vox I wouldn't change a bit... awesome:rock:

Wow!! Its great to hear you sing & play, John.IMO the vox quite low in the mix compares to the distortion GT but overall works are great great.I luv it bro.***** from me instantly:rock:

Okay lets start with the vocals , well they are fantastic as always , nothing wrong with them at all m8 , guitars well i dunno its such a hard call John , everyone listens for diffrent things tone wise and mixing wise , i think for rhythm it sounds nice n dirty but im inclined to agree with Jamie that i think two rhythm tracks each side work better, ive been trying this out on my last few songs and it does sound much better then one side or down the middle , obviously if your on stage to and have two guitarists then it will work a treat on that to m8:)
Overall though John i still think tones are a personal preference lol :woot:
I wish you the best of luck me ol m8 on it all , don't forget us when your touring all around the world

Thanks for the response y'all!! Yea , i guess what i was really trying to get feedback on was the general overall tone of the guitar....not so much the way it is panned or any other particulars, pretty much just tone. Like i said in the original post, i spent absolutely no time on the vocal, and my playing is really not up to snuff, just wanted a little reaction on the tone........hope to hear a few more observations!!!:thumb:

I say this cover ruled!
The amazing thing here is.... your not the main singer of your band???:headscratch: :jawdrop:
Now thatīs such a waste of talent! Even if your singer sounds like Sebastian B you have your own personality and a trully great gifted voice...

Now, i do feel the guitar tone is the weak point. The playing is very good. I think you should record another guitar and pann the tracks. At 00:48 you should add a clean guitar for that part and add some distorted 5ths on the main chorus.

However bro, to be honest with you, im a fan of your voice so i dont care too much for the music when you put your voice on any track. Congrats i really enjoyed this one:yourock:

Sounded just fine to me. I'm not experienced enough to offer any constructive advice on the tone etc, bit if you are singing backing in your new band then I wanna hear this guys voice!!!!!

I think what gives the original that sparkle is some sort of Aural Exciter. I think you have the right ingredients. It's very very close. When you crank it live it will be on the money.

I can't believe you are not doing the lead vocals!!! That is a crime brother!!
You could also play the guitar and eliminate a few shares from the pay. Plus, who's got a better voice than you??!! Either way John, congrats!! It's a blast playing out. (although it sucks to break down gear and setup and come home smelling like smoke). Get a roadie! :) :thumb:

One last note...I think we need to take down that original MP3. That's a whole kettle of fish we don't want to touch. It's a copyrighted tune posted for all to see. We don't want the RIAA coming down on us. (I think it would be cool though to post a sample of the original, but the full monty might be a bad thing). Just trying to be the good admin here and point that out.

Hey man..let us know how it goes!! I am super happy for you!!

i for one am happy to hear you are out playing in a band. as time goes on you will sing more leads i'm sure. your tone sounds good although it will sound completely different through your p.a. system. so keep that in mind. where the effects might sound a little heavy recorded it may be necessary to be that way when played live. then again guys like you, me, cap spaz and mondy are deaf so why are you asking us. lol. its like asking a blind person if your hair looks good

Thanks GT, Steve, Sergio and Kenny. Yea Serg, wasn't thinking i guess, just thought some of the first few to respond weren't getting that i just really cared about comments on TONE, and not anything else.....thought it would be helpful for them to hear the original for comparison. And yea, i won't be the lead vocal for the most part. The singer is OK, nothing to write home about, but does a fine job. I will probably get to do a few leads, but it will really be much easier to not sing and play at the same time!!! Just a few back vox is about all i can concentrate on while i'm playing. I hope to post some of the live stuff when we finally get out there jamming. Thanks again for all the input fella's, and sorry again Sergio, i'll be a good boy from now on!!! LOL!!!!!:yourock:

First off...CONGRATS on the band thing!!!! :woot: Man, I envy you(or anyone else that's to get out and play live)!!!!!

Second....you playing rhythm guitar and doing backup vocals is a crime!!!!!:bitchslap: "Specially if the singer you have is "just ok"!!!

Third...I can't really comment on the tone cuz, I don't know the origional...but it all sounds good to me!!!:D

Tone-wise it sounds pretty close to the original, although maybe a little strong on the chorus. The thing that's deceptive is that any recording utilizes studio magic that you won't be able to duplicate live (multiple layers of guitars, micing to get a certain ambience from the room, etc.) The other part that's hard to duplicate is how the guitars sit in the mix with the drums and bass. Even with an accurate tone, if the backing doesn't match, it spoils the whole thing. My advice is to play loud because people won't be able to tell how close it is when it's live.

weren't nutting wrong with that, you are one awesome singer John,

I have really got into panning rhythm guitars left and right, so give taht a try and ultimately just experiment

I truly loved this cover and it played back gr8 thru my headphones:bowdown:

Hey John, Loved this but I'll refrain from getting to specific on how good it was and try to lend if at all possible to the tone side...

I used to play 'crackerman' with my band a while back and initially was using an Agile copy of a Les Paul Standard. I thought it sounded pretty close. Somewhere along the way I picked up another copy, Agile DC with P90's, which I think was more in the ball park of the guitar Dean was using at the time. It was something similar to a Gibson TV yellow double cutaway with p90's. At any rate the reason I mention it (not to suggest going out and buying a new axe, all though you'd get a 100% endorsement from me on Agile), maybe try dialing something in on the POD that would have more of that P90 pickup sound and roll back a hair on the chorus. This seemed liked it had a hair more than the original track and came across slightly thinner. All in all though, I thought this would carry well in a live performance without hearing what the other guitarist is dialing up, although I'd be conscious of how much "room" is added by the venue. Might want to go a little dryer and let the venue create some of the verb. Good luck with the band brother... Knock em dead!

This was killer!! excellent vocals and tone. I love STP and wished they would get back together. Kudos to you for playin the heavier stuff in your band. My old band (big rock unit) did and it went over great. People ate it up. This is a really tough song to pull off as it can be pushed by anyone in the band (drummer mainly) and end up sounding too fast. Good Luck man!!!:yourock:

I seem to remember hearing this tune some time, somewhere, but I don't really remember it in detail, so I can't comment on how close ya got on the guitar tone. But I do think the tone ya got here sounds great.

As most others, I guess, I'm in shock that you're in a band and you're not the lead singer :headscratch:
But hey, I can't think of a better backup singer :p Rock on!
