I was trying to run antivirus and it threw me out of XP

Now I cannot log back in as PC is eons old and I cannot remember password

I tried getting in through safe mode as administrator (with and without a password of "admin")- BUT I cannot log in

I have the 2 XP SP1 discs but I had since upgraded online to XP2....I try to put disc 1 in and I am having trouble getting it to boot from the CDROM

How on earth can I log back in and use this desktop, or how do I get the discs to boot up

I am in a mess here:mad1:

thx guys

You should still be able to get in with safe mode:

1. Reboot Windows in Safe Mode.

2. Click Start, and then click Run.

3. In the Open box, type the following command, and then click OK: control userpasswords2

4. Click the user account that you forgot the password for, and then click Reset Password.

5. Type a new password in both the New password and the Confirm new password boxes, and then click OK.

What AV did this anyway? Could be a virus itself:dunno: I'd think twice about running it again:)

tried that I reboot whilst pressing F8 and start in safe mode, it asks for a login I try administrator and admin, then it stops at a black screen with safe mode in each corner of screen

it has me beat, i cannot even run the install discs again:upset:

now I cannot boot from a CD even

I changed it in Bios to run CD, but it keeps going to login page

this is older HP, that has DVD & CD, how do i get this pc to go straight to CD so i can reinstall XP at least...>?

will replacing the hard drive get around this and start me from new?

It might try it.

It should, sounds like a corrupted hard drive to me put in a new hard drive and give it a shot.

Try diconnecting one of the drives so ther is only one cd/dvd drive for it to find. Then change your bios to read from that drive first.

Make sure also that the drive is set to master and not slave.

Well i'd imagine a new HD would allow you to get booted up and running again, as virus's usually get working when you boot up from your HD, and if its not longer the same HD, it shoudln't be able to do any more damage, i would remove the HD completely and exercise extreme caution if u try to rescue any files of there (if at all tbh, painful as it is to lose everything).
Have you tried formating the disk out of interest?, if you're not bothered about whats on the HD, that would solve the problem too providing the disk isn't corrupt, i used to have so many problems with Win ME back when i was using it, i have all my disks ready for when it went wrong (thats right, not "if" but "when" ), so you might want to try that too, as a virus shoudln't be able to survive a full format either (don't do a quick format, just to be safe).
Best of luck with it mate.

Good luck! I'm in my own private computer hell atm, and came across these in a search for finding lost USB drivers, and how to identify unknown devices.

Good luck bro!

you knowthe wierd thing is it will not even take the repeated F10 command to do a Safe recovery, I was hoping to just refomat whole hard drive but I cannot get in thru' F10 way

Is there anyone you can borrow a HD from? If not, buy another, Install XP, slave your original drive up to it then format it via your new XP installation. Once done you should be able to then format it again this time use F disk just to make sure nothing's lingering on there. I've done this in the past, it's also a good excuse for getting more Gb;s of space. :D

Good luck mate :thumb:

Well i think you're best of using a boot disk/cd mate, i know you've been having probs with that, but i'd try and get into dos from a boot disk and run fdisk on that drive, delete the partition, and create a new primary partition, format it (or let windows do the format on installation).
To me it sounds past the point of recovery, sometimes (and most often in my experience) its less stress to just wipe the thing clean and start over, its never ideal, but it will save a headache, and if you're like me and backup everything religously (everything important anyhow), then your probably not losing to much anyway.
Again, best of luck with it mate.
