If you're using XP, by default it restarts if there is a serious error. What is causing it could be alot of things (hardware conflict - possibly the power supply, software conflict, overheating, virus, etc). We need more info to narrow it down. You may have to look through your administration logs found in the Control Panel under Administration/Computer Management. What are you doing when it happens. What programs are running? Is the computer hot? Do you get any error messages and if so, what do they say?

Hi PG what ive done so far is gone to My Computer /Properties/Start up Recovery and unchecked the restart. Im hoping if it happens again i will get an error message which will give me a chance of sorting it.

Im running XP and it can happen at any time, even just after it has booted up so i dont think its over heating. Ill see how it fairs now and if i get an error message ill give you a buzz if you dont mind ??

Cheers!!!!:thumb:

No problem. It shouldn't happen anymore now that you've unchecked that option. If it does than something is seriously wrong. Only thing with doing this is, you still are having critical errors which will degrade the performance of the PC, possibly causing it to lock up. The restart option is there to prevent that. We'll see how it goes:thumb:

I would suspect bad RAM or a power supply problem. If you can operate with one stick of RAM, try swapping them out and see if one in particular causes this problem. (for the meanwhile). Your event viewer should have some references to the problem. See if you can go through the entries in "System" and "applications" and look for warnings or errors.

Just to cover another angle.
It could also be graphics related problem, check that the card (if you have one) hasn't become slightly unseated. This is unlikely unless the pc has been knocked or moved harshly.
97% of the time the more likely cause is usually a power supply on it's way out.
Good luck
