Yngwie

After all these years I still dig the guy!

Ok so I grew up in the 1980’s as a teenager listening to all the shred monsters come to life. Yngwie was a guitar player that certainly captivated me with his soloing. Never dug his actually songs but was in complete admiration of his ability and influences. Over the years I have learnt a few of his tricks to playing fast, whereas I know to learn some other guitar players tricks would involve mindless hours of practice.

Lots of people agree on his huge ego but I honestly can’t imagine him any other way and he’s always been very true to himself now when I look back. He’s at least upfront with his ego, a little like Jack Nicholson or David Lee Roth, not brooding and manipulating. You have guys like Ed Van Halen who are sort of ducking and weaving and fading away into their own attempts at change …but Yngwie still plays the same style of guitar, the same equipment and probably wears the same clothes. Imagine if Eddie VH was like that still playing with his marshall’s and MXR effects. Its like Clapton…that guy has been through all sorts but still stays true to himself with the blues and a strat. Clapton has even improved with age - Ed VH talks about curing cancer illegally...Clapton opens up rehab clinics and organizes benefit concerts.

So anyway I’m watching G3 denver last night again and I had the volume up nice and loud. I really came away impressed by how Yngwie placed himself with Satch and Vai. I found the petrucci and eric Johnson G3’s a little boring and actually missed Yngwies antics. Throwing guitars around his neck, biting the strings and keeping the Hendrix vibe going. Sure he gets sloppy now and then but he's into it and it unpredictable. Vai and satch are quite predictable IMO. Somehow for me he gets away with it all. Even if he’s slightly foolish – it’s a loveable foolishness.

There is one particular shot I just completely saw the big kid in Yngwie. It’s a scene when they’re playing Voodoo Chile I think and Yngwie walks/runs over to satch and vai like a little boy his face all lit up pouncing along. I tried to imagine other famous guitarists having that much fun or having enough ego to try outdo satch and particularly vai. Could you imagine Ed VH at a G3 concert? At times it even looks like Vai is being upstaged by Yngwie! Yngwie takes all the opportunities to squeeze in a solo. While Vai might have the technical nouse (like the 3 neck guitar elegance) and satch the tasteful playing and compassion for organizing such an event, Yngwie has a sort of showmanship that still cuts through well. No doubt about it – he’s unique and very much himself. On stage Vai has a teeny little legacy amp, satch has a couple of XXX which you could hardly hear when they played together….and wait…there’s Yngwie with a wall of fake marshall’s like its donnington! With Yngwie both the renaissance and the late 20th century have been kept alive! Satch is trying to look like a cross between a homeboy rapper and raver, Vai seems like he’s waiting for acceptance into the Smithsonian institute with his refined goatie and feminine clothes…but wait there’s yngwie again with the leather pants, 80’s hair, chains and cowboy boots and also a bit of a rock n roll beer gut!

Despite all the changes to music, Yngwie still holds his own in my book.

I have to agree with all that Paul, I still really like Yngwie's guitar playing and musicianship. I've heard other sides of Yngwie too, he is a fantastic blues player and his hendrix style of playing is awesome. I still like his Neo stuff as well, but there is only so much of that you can take in one sitting LOL. Love him or Loathe him, he will always be a very talented guitarist. I've never really seen him as egotistic, just opinionated, the boy know what he likes, anything outside of that does'nt get much of a look in. I hope one day he'll show the other sides of his playing in a new album or too.

Totally agree on the bluesy stuff. Id love to see him to a complete blues album! I have a few mp3's from an album of cover songs he did which includes manic depression and some deep purple covers. He should do more of that because I think he's playing style could easily cross over to all sorts of genres.

Yeah i must admit i do admire his playing technique and that lovely tone he gets , as Justin said though its just a pity he dosen't step out into diffrent areas more often but i suppose its worked well for him for what over 20yrs? so he probably thinks why do anything diffrent :toothless:
Personally though i can only listen to afew of his songs before having to turn them off after a short while , i have to hear variety when listening to music and for me thats something that stops him from being up there with many of the great guitarists imo :)
Still he has done some fantastic songs , Crystal Ball , Rising Force , Blitzkrieg, Fugue , some of my favourites of his :D

I was never into the guy, but of late I have been revisiting his stuff, mainly due to DannyBoy who sent me some MP3's and as we all know is Yngwie when he wants to be. Still cant listen for log tho, but the guy is an awesome guitarist no doubt.

no doubt the man has immense talent, im the same as my mates here though, that is i can only listen for a few tracks.
hes like a lot of the old rockers too...leather, hair,[wig..dye] they get stuck in a time warp, or wont age gracefully.

jim.

Nice to see a thread outside of the Official YJM Boards that talks about appreciating Yngwie for once, didn't take long to start turning though , wonder what the next 5 posts will be (if there is any)

I could add some stuff here but you guys all pretty much know my thoughts on old Malmage.

No problem, here´s the first one, :).
I had enough the first 5 minutes I gave a listen to this individual at around 1988. I almost puked listening to such a hick pseudo-emulating some classical music on a distorted guitar. Of course I still have the same feelings for him, nice clown for sure, :D, not even in his deepest dreams he will ever come close to any real classical compositor-musician. If I want blues, I´ll listen to a bluesman. If I want Renaisanse/Baroque lute I´ll go for John Dowland, but never listen a japanese sing or play a Flamenco tune.

Ok heres my thoughts , we all knew this thread would come to a differing of opinions haha i guesss thats what makes this place interesting.

I really like yngwie for the most part , theres no denying he's a unique guitar player and really opened that style of playing for alot of people . not to mention his tone is unbelievable and even though i've never been a massive follower , i did want to copy that tone haha.

It is good in a way that he hasn't changed , it's what he's known for and he does it pretty well . I'm just glad it's not me haha . running around in spandex pants and doing those rock kicks is just so dated it's not funny. I've watched the same g3 dvd and it's completely comical to me which is a shame because he should be respected for his guitar playing. not ridiculed. His playing over that version of little wing is just completely crazy and whilst it's his style , would it kill you to play something different over one of the most tender rock ballads ever written ?

anyway just my opinion on the matter !

I was totally swept away by his Little Wing solo, I thought it was passionate and powerful. But maybe im just looking for different things to you.

Yeah i know , again it's all opinion i guess and what we like. To be fair i didn't care for the cover as a whole even vai's solo seemed way over the top for me.

I was just kinda using it as an example that i wish he would just play something a little more laid back sometimes.

but again all opinions :)

Couple of sizes too big, I think it was Yngwie's originally.

I agree with everything you stated but one thing. I don't think Vai is predictable, he is by far one of the most creative players out there. Yngwie has been one of my favorite guitarist of all times. I can listen to him all day and I love neoclassical as well. I am not the biggest blues fan, I feel about blues the same way other people feel about neoclassical:notme: . By no means do I think it sucks  .

One of the things I am not a fan of is his attitude. Though I have never had the pleasure of meeting him, I've heard many stories about his ego. I would be a even bigger fan if he was more like Petrucci (personality not playing).

Just my 2 cents

I am not bashing the guy btw
Sorry if it seems that way

I have heard some nasty things about Petrucci, a couple stories from Danny Danzi infact. He might enlighten us should he stumble upon the thread. Of all my guitar heroes the one I wanna meet most is Vai. He has a massive ego but it is controlled and he is a genuine lovely bloke from what I can tell. Him or Paul Gilbert I guess. I would hate to meet Yngwie just incase he ruined it for me.

Wow, I have heard the complete opposite of him (petrucci). Would you happen to have the links to those threads.

thanks in advance

Btw Paul Gilbert looks like such a class act. The singer for my band got to meet Tony Macalpine and he said he was very nice and down to earth.

I don't to be honest, makes it seem like im making it up but im pretty certain I had a conversation of such nature with Danz a while ago. Was a good 4 years ago now though.

I always was a big fan of his. He's a pillar of guitar athletics and has a great repretoire. Go Yngwie!
