Hi fellas.

Just bought these two babies:

Strat(ish) for £30 + delivery inc' gig bag

6-string fretless bass for £90 + delivery ....

(ok ... the bass is a gift for the wife :notme:)

Time for Pete to flame me over the 'ugly' bass now!! :toothless:

I'm not one to disappoint! Yes it's ugly alright, typical modern bass, no character and with six strings too  Sacriledge!
They'll never beat these lads ever!

Cheers mate ... KNEW I could rely on ya! :thumb:

Well, the wife likes it and it'll be a challenge for her (and me) to re-learn on a fretless (AND 6 strings!) ... back in the late 80s, she used to have a hot pink Aria ProII, 'Jackson' style thing with basic "Precision" shape and droopy, pointed headstock with active electrics ... together with a 250W H-H "Bass Baby" head and 8x10 cab!!

You can't beat an 8x10 for punch. wish I could justify getting one of these fella's

Thought you had enough 'punch' of yer OWN mate?

Yeah, that rig she used to have 'cut the mustard' alright ... punch a-plenty ... pity she never kept on playing, but money got real tight in the early 90s (when was it ever NOT?) and we ended up selling the lot to keep the wolves at bay.

looking forward to getting these new wee beasties delivered ...

That strat is made by......Alba :headscratch: They were on ebay for £49 quid. I reckon it'll be made out of contiboard and you'll be able to drive a double decker under the action.

PS. Jim Nice call on the bass mate :thumb: I knew someone else would see sense too!

Nice couple of axe's John, like that strat (the bird's not bad either!). I'm using my mates bass at the moment, alot of fun.I'm trying to learn the slap and pull technique, I should be a dab hand at it, just got to practice it now on the bass ! LOL....

I reckon Jim was talking about me sig' pic', rather than the bass mate!

£49 would be for the 'strat' on B.I.N. only ... I got it on the starting price of an auction (£29.98 actually). As for quality? well, worth a gamble for £30 ... and Jim got one too, I think. From what I hear, they're prety good for the price. Besides, I can always drown the tone in overdrive (nothing new THERE then!)

Now then paul!!! Why so many strings on a fretless?? If you can't do enough with 4 whats the point!! Sorry I'm a bit of a traditionalist. Not bad for the dosh though!! Pete I love the T-bird ,used a 70's one at a gig once but it was a bit neck heavy, loved the sound but couldn't get away with it !! My brother in law is using my trace elliot for our live stuff, now thats a powerhouse with both punch and balls!!

I've had a couple 5 strings and although its fun to watch the expressions on some faces, particularly band members who stray into the path of your sonic attack, when you pull the Low B. It becomes a bit of a gimmick and mostly lost on the crowd anyway and they're a bit weighty for rockin' too! So there.
Now I have the Warwick Thumb 4 so eat shit mortals.

Yeah Dave they do tend to neck dive, on mine I've moved the front strap button to the back (where the neck joins the body) and it's a hell of a lot better. You know how long I've wanted one don't you? So a little battle with the neck was never gonna phase me. On the neck issue I've seen a number of pics/vids of these later Gibson's where the player has had both hands off the bass and there's no neck dive, maybe Gibson have counter balanced them these days. If so it's only took the lazy bastards 46 years to sort the issue.

Well, the Alba Strat arrived Monday, earlier tihs week.

Was a vintage white, not canary yellow (bonus).

REALLY looks the part, but the body is so damn LIGHT ... seems more like compessed fibres than solid wood.

For £30 though, I can't fault the build and finish quality ... whadd'ya EXPECT for £30??

Bit of a setup required (neck relief, string action and intonation) and it plays quite well. Has 'quite' a strat(tish) tone too.

The tone through my V-amp was an almost convincing reproduction of Gary Moore's, circa 1982 (Corridors of Power album).

Still, it doesn't feel quite sturdy enough to gig with, so I've given it to my son as his first 'learner' guitar ... plus I went and bought him a 10W Marshall practice amp for his bedroom ... GREAT sound at low volume!

Happy bunnies all round :thumb:

Just waiting for the bass now (should arrive sometime next week) :woot:

Congrats on both purchases mate, the Strat sounds cool, and the lightnes reminds me of Marts Av-2, when we were building it the solid block of Swamp Ash weighed less then my Av-1 cut and finished, and once we had shaped it it was oh so light, makes my Av-1 feel like anvil, took abit of getting used to :) , for £30 though sounds a bargin :thumb:
Look forward to hearing the fretless bass too when it arrives, and as you said, everyone's gone bass mad
