Being very lucky on the birthday front i have enough cash for an entry level bass. Ive had a look around this evening on the great world wide web and could anybody give me some help on whether any of these would be worth my while. The first is from Ebay, the second is mail order the third i can goto my local store and pick up tomorrow! Any feedback would be much appreciated. Thanks all.:thumb:

I'd go for the 2nd hand Yamaha if you can pick it up in Sleaford? I think the newer ones aren't as well made. Also check out Peavey basses...they is good! Happy birthday BTW mate. :thumb:

Thanks mate!! Yeah Sleaford is about 40 mins away from me, so not far. Just realised there's only about an hour left on the bidding tho, so ill check what happens with it. Im very tempted at this one as long as theres no frenzy at the end. Thanks for the advice Chris.:yourock:

Hi mate! I know nothing about basses, are Precisions just Fender? or are there cheaper alternatives? I only have about 130 quid to spend on said bass and ill only be using it for recording. Thanks mate.:thumb:

I have a Squier Precision Special and it's absolutely fine. It's my 3rd Squier! They retail new from anywhere between £149 to £189. As long as you keep away from the Squier Affinity range you'll be ok.

How about this?

http://www.thomann.de/gb/harley_benton_hot_rod_bass.htm

There is a cheaper version too, but without the jazz pickup and an unspecified body material, I would guess plywood? No idea as to the quality, but Uke's bass is the same make and he seems happy. I have been looking at their Strat copies, but she wont let me buy one :(

That one is a Basswood body, so it should be fine (its not plywood which the main thing to avoid with anything), im probably gonna buy this one in the next week or two:

Its basically the Righthand version of Tonys, which sounded great to my ears, so might be worth a look too.

fender copy...solid wood..weighs a tonne...only £43 though, does my needs.

Thanks Steve, Av and Jim for your recommendations. :thumb:

Well Ive just come back from Sound Contol where i played on the Yamaha. It was really nice, it was lighter than my guitar! the neck was quite slim, really easy to play and it sounded good.

Not sure whether it being so light is a good thing or a bad thing. Any thoughts guys??? The way im looking at it is that im never gonna gig with it and itl'l probably never even leave the house.

Bro! I use a Fender P bass. I really like Peavey though. They sound really good,..even their cheaper models sound great. I'm getting a 5 string Peavey as soon as I can get my ass back to the music store to pick it up. I've had it on lay away for 2 weeks now. It was $349.00 US. Just get something you're happy with man. If ya like the way it sounds and plays get it! It's not like you'll be giggin with it. You're just layin down tracks with it,..right?. You can MAKE it sound good....ya know what I mean!

Heya Johnny!

Exactly right mate! I just need it to fill out those bottom bits when im recording. All the recommendations have been fantastic, people seem to find things right out of the woodwork! Anywho, I just stumbled on this 3/4 size which may be right up my street i think. My mate has one without the logo, ive played on that one and it sounded good to me. I can get the plain one for 95.

I won't ever knock the T-bird Dave! Though I don't think it's the bass for this lad, (I can't remember your name mate, sorry) he dosen't need to battling with neck dive. (Note how Algy is having to hold his in the pic below)

Sorry I'm late to the thread ... I played a friend's 3/4 Fender, which was good from a guitar-player-learning-to-play-bass perspective, but I didn't really like the sound of it for recording. This was almost 20 years ago, so maybe these are better today, but I think you get a little fuller, deeper sound from a full-size bass. It's harder to play, especially when you have small hands like me, but it's worth it soundwise IMO. Hope it works out for you!

My brother got his boy a short scale bass, I was not too impressed to be honest. Cant remember what make it was but they are not short of a few bob so it will not have been a plywood plank. Easier to get to grips with tho. Anywhere you can go to play one first?

The bass on its own is £70 so nice price, but why this one over the Hotrod, which tho £10 more has precision p/ups and a jazz p/up at the bridge, and specifies a basswood body, whereas the Jazz copy does not, which probably means it is ply? I would be very tempted to take a couple of Johnny's patience pills and wait for Jamie to get his, get a better idea on the quality of these things, then decide which one to go for.

I have just bought myself a bass!! :woot:

As i said i played on a YamahaRBX170 at the local music store and thought it was excellent, so i just bought the model up a mint condition RBX270 from Ebay for 95. The RBX170 was 150quid and these retail at between 170 and 200quid so I think ive done quite well there.

Wot the fuck is Basswood?

Basswood seems good stuff, its an American wood, used in alot of guitars because its widely available and cheap, any kinda wood is far better then ply too, ply is just nasty, most of the Ibanez RG range uses Basswood, aswell as all the JS sig models, and plenty of other manufactures use it too, so i would say its quite a good wood.
The link you posted looks a decent buy i must say, but the deal is done now, plus with the Pod X3L, it has alot of Bass amps too, so i don't need anything else with it as such.
Once it arrives my my setup it pretty much complete (aslong as it sounds good :) ), it will be nice being able to play proper bass on songs too :)

Hope the Yamaha sounds great too Stereo, congrats on the purchase, look forward to hering it in action :thumb:

Hey John, thanks for looking in! Yeah i played the one at the store and to me it played awesome. Now i don't know much about basses but it felt good and sounded good to me. If i were a bass player ( which reminds me that im gonna have to learn to play the thing!) then im sure that i would have gone for something the size of Japan and with more guts.
