This one is a Black Sabbath track from the 'Heaven and Hell' album called 'Lonely Is The Word'. Not sure how well known it is (it's the album closer) but it's been my favourite Dio era song for years and one that Heaven and Hell (Sabbath with Dio under 'contractual' name) usually finish the set with I'm told. I did the guitars nearly 4 YEARS AGO!!! It was lost in a hard drive crash but after another power failure, all the stuff I'd lot was back...and all the stuff I had was lost! :dunno: Blooody computers!

Anyway, Bulldog's thread offering real drums got me thinking and I asked if he wanted to follow along with the backing track (so I wouldn't have to do the guitars again). He did a REALLY good take on Bill Ward and then I got down to trying to do Geezer Butler's bass line. MUCH harder than the guitarwork believe me! The guy is...a Geezer!

Justin added his keyboard touches to the outro and then we thought WHO can do the vox? Back then it was gonna be Geordie so he was the natural (and obvious) choice for a vocal as big as this. Once again he tore it a new ass and so here we are...and I'm chuffed to have done something with him after all this time.

A load more 'lost' stuff floated to the top so I'm gonna want a singer for a Sevendust song next...any takers????? Thanks for this one guys...another one ticked in the 'done' box. :thumb:

This is a fantastic cover, Its like a proper little virtual band!. The guitars were just awesome Chris, so much tone and energy in the playing, great bass work too. Johnny, brilliant drums, you are one excellent all round musician and Geordie, very very Dio like vocals, you got all those little expressions in there too!. I feel a little embarassed being mentioned alongside these great guys as my role in this is very very small!, completely brilliant work by the other 3 though!!...This was rocking and top marks...

Still love this album, I played it to death back then, as it sorta took away some of the pain of Ozzy leaving  You nailed this guys, it could easily have been "Heaven and hell" playing there. Easy 5.

Thanks all. No mate, this was the Squier strat I think. It has a Seymour Duncan hot rails in the bridge and sounds very much like a rock guitar rather that a blues when you use it full-on.

Listened to it yesterday, but got turfed off of the pc before I could comment!

Bloody kids!!

Yeah, sounds the real deal here ... cept you can hear the difference with a full complement of fingertips on the fretboard :notme:

Reminds me of High Grange Community centre, Billingham (or was it LOW Grange?) .... OVERLOAD rehearsal .... Neon Knights played on an iceman (no Squier Strat on the horizon THEN, eh?)

Nicely done guys :thumb:

Well, loved playing on this, it lends itself to improvise with the beat and fills.
Really enjoyed also playing to some quality bass and guitar, not to mention the keys filling nicely on the outro, then Geordie added the cream to the cake with his awesome vocals.

Outstanding job Wah!
looking forward to the Bullet track.

Will start the drum track to china town, and also a couple of others that are in the cue, this weekend and next week as I have a week off work so I'm looking forward to slapping some more tracks out.

cheers for the oportunity chris m8 :)

This is my favourite song from Dio's Sabbath era.

Iommi's solo's always remind me of Ritchie on this track.

Massive rendition , immense solid and as hard as Bell Metal . Drums are sequenced brilliantly . I need those samples dude if you have them pleeeeeeaaaasssseeee , very authentic .

The voice is totally nailed , i never expected anything less from Geordie . A guy who should be a star and known to millions , but instead he is content with his lot and offers his talents here in GB , top stuff i say and a bloody nice bloke , even if he doesn't swallow :boobies: .

Chris , these guitar tones are just so cool , you're a whiz at tapping in a squeal then popping in a lightning fast riff , how do you do it :headscratch: . All the playing is benchmark , indeed its a joy to listen too as the production seems tailor made for my headphones . Brilliant guys , brilliant !!!!!!!!!!!!

:) cheers for the drums comment m8 :)
they are not sequenced it was played on a Roland V-drums kit its a recorded performance :)

The drum sounds are straight from EZdrummer the POP/Rock kit setting, I don't think Chris did anything with the sound of the drums but I'm not 100% maybe Chris can answer that 1, but they don't sound any different :)
The Roland kits are awesome for recording dynamics/velocity the feel it records is great and you dont have to mic up anything :)

I never looked twice at an electronic kit until now, I have always played acoustic kits all my life, but I'm glad I have, cos its set me back up drumming again and I'm loving every minute :)

This track was cool to play too, lending itself to mess with what beat to play off and when to fill etc.
great to play to those guitars off Chris's

Think its EZdrummers POP/Rock Kit on the tight kit setting going back to the sound, but I feel its the Roland kit that really adds the final touch to the over all sound.

Damn, I love hearing WahWah play.....not only great sounds but great expression in your playing Chris...it's all in the fingers like most top notch guitarists, and you're no exception. Doesn't seem to matter which guitar you pick up. I gotta hit the woodshed again. Vox were awsome, and Bulldog adding "live" drums just sets the whole track off. 5***** of course!!

wahwah

Thank you very much bearman...it's very much appreciated. You too Bluesy...all I can say about the squeals is lots of bloody practise! I use my little finger of my picking hand to get the harmonics and I've been asked about it 100's of times. The only reason I do it this way is because I didn't know how Alex Lifeson did it in 1977 and tried to find my own way.

Cheers guys. :thumb:

:) EZdrummers samples are really cool, upgrading to superior 2 when it comes out, up to 32 piece kit and plenty of drum samples and sound adjustments to get em bang on :)
gonna add some more pads to the kit aswell :)

Cheers runnerbean (another smoggy???) and Eric. I really love this Iommi solo. I always thought the guy had some interesting stuff like 'Symptom Of The Universe', Snowblind' etc but he seemed to reinvent his melodic sense on this album. Not as heavy as the Ozzy stuff but stillas valid. :thumb:
