So I've been roped into being the 'guitar-singist' at a blues jam night in High Wycombe next Thursday...I'm crapping meself because I can never remember any really standard blues numbers to do! I mean I always do 'Red House'. 'Hard To Handle', 'Blue Jean Blues' ...BUT what really standard stuff can I pull out of the hat? I can play loads but I just freeze until someone starts something up but I'm the starting guy next week! The intention is to do three or four and then get the audience up,,,it's a well attended night so there's lots of diversions. Gimme 4 or 5 killer blues tracks I can get my teeth into PLEASE!

Depends what you are after.

Performance wise I would go for a Fleetwood Mac tune like Oh Well or the LWJ cover Need Your Love So Bad.

A John Lee Hooker tune like Boom Boom is a stomper.

Freddie Kings Hideaway is a great instrumental and a good opener

Cold Day in Hell would be good too but would feel a little bare without the horn sectionl.

I dunno mate. Walking By Myself is one, and Johnny B Goode has also been mentioned.

I'm more like you, can't think of any off the top of my head, but once somone starts playing one, I go, "Oh yeah, that's a great one !"

Good luck with it !

Lots of great tunes already mentioned. I was actually gonna say Boom boom and hoochie coochie man too.
Maybe some classics like five long years, got my mojo working, catfish blues, stuff like that. And ya gotta do some SRV!

Some good examples here...SOME I already had noted down; especially 'Oh Well' by Fleetwood Mac, Pride and Joy and Scuttlebuttin' by SRV, a slowed down version of 'Killing Floor' and gonna look at Freddie King's 'I'm Tore Down' also. In the past staple ones were 'Hard To Handle', 'Sweet Home Alabama' and 'Mustang Sally' but I think the jam nights maybe getting a little tired of them three!

Since found out someone else is hosting it so only got to think of 4 songs tops.

It's a jam night right? Why not just pull the "12 bar in G" thing and make crap up? That's the real blues anyway.

Definitely 'The Sky Is Crying' in B7, 'I'm Going Down' in D and maybe 'Texas Flood' if I can get Bob the bass to learn it. Just got an 11 album Freddie King steal off the net. Literally a steal...I mean I stole it! Some great, great stuff there; I'm gonna soak these influences up.

So ?

How'd it go me old mukka ?

Played like a twat! By the time I went on (10.30), I was 4 sheets to the wind and all me thunder had been stolen by other players before me who played the songs I'd thought. Apparently I sang really well! All joking aside, it got 4 members of my old band back together for 30 minutes including Lawrie on the sax who has played on the Floyd stuff I recorded.

Bit of a panic this morning when I couldn't find the EVH but in my stupor I'd put it in the car boot!

I've done that before when you are on last at a jam night and you're far too pissed!!I've made a total tit of myself doing that and usually these jam nights are ran by a band using it as an excuse to show off their band rather than new talant,so they set up the p.a. just for them!!:wtf: Still I bet you where still mint mate!!:)

Sounds like a successful night then !

Pissed up and playing guitar like a twat. Two things I can do well !

Hehe...well I've been asked to do a few things so that's good. Get me out and off my fat ass for a change. I really enjoyed singing but my EVH didn't sound brilliant thru this amp and the guy whose it was didn't want me to change the settings (typical jam night fayre!)

As a final note I came home, opened the door, staggered in and left the Musicman on the step until this morning!!! :wtf:
