I really wanted to do a full blown cover of this but never got round to it. Geordies beautiful rendition of crazy with a simple guitar and vocal style made me think it might be ok to put this up here. It's a test more than anything else, a test of my new way of recording vocals. Seeing what I can pick up now that I don't have to shout the damn things to pick it all up, a bit of a softer approach. But it's kinda neat in a monotonous, slow, marching forever onwards kind of way .

You surprised me with your choice of song to cover here, not that I know it, but well sung! I see the comparison with Geordie's, simple backing and vocals doing the work, and it came out real well.

Excellent! NOW your finding the voice that's YOU mate. This same as the version on poor matey who died swimming in the Mississippi a good few years ago? Whatever, it's GOLD mate. I keep on threatening to do something like 'Sitting On The Dock of The Bay' with acoustic but I can't be arsed to set it all up. This might be the inspiration I need...cos it is inspiring. :thumb:

Hey Lindy, Cohen is a great poet, he cannot sing for shizzle but many smashing artists should thank him for writing this as they have been able to do some great covers.

I just copied everyone else man, I'll pass on the thanks if I ever meet em haha :D.

You know what's cool Chris, putting the mic through my amp this way lets me go from really quiet breathy singing to full out rocking and it is all picked up. It has been such a great discovery, that's why I wanna do more vocals when I can (Chinatown, Unintended etc). I think on some level i always knew where my voice was at it's best, I used to sing alot of songs before I got more into the electric side. That's not to say im a great singer, but it is to say that I know where my voices place is at. I have tried to show it a few different rooms in the house from time to time but it knows where it's bedroom is I guess . Im full of fucking stupid analogies and metaphors aren't I.

You think much of this chaps voice Geordie ?. I love this version, it's like Buckleys cept... better (to me). I actually like Rufus Wainwrights version but he's a little sloppily with pronunciation too often.

Danny....to say that we're not the best of friends would be a major understatement!!! But, recently I've been listening and watching many covers of this song and it has become one of my favorite songs of all time!!! Sooooo, that being the case I decided to put the past behind and listen to your rendition. And I was pleasantly surprised!!! Exlnt tone to your voice and your vocal control and pitch was superb. Fantastic performance!!! Now I know that you probably won't care at all about my opinion....but, that's ok...I still enjoyed it very much!!!

Btw...here's the best version that I've heard....

YouTube - K.D. Lang sings Leonard Cohen's Hallelujah

Well Danny, this is just an amazing rendition of this beautiful song!!! I truly thought you more a baritone, based on the few things i have heard from you, but this is absolutely surprising. Your recording technique on this is perfect......as you said, you are getting all the nuances of the dynamics so clear...STELLAR!!! Your vocals are sublime mate!!! And I do believe this to be the best way to convey a song such as this....Excellent work here mate!!!! And definite ***** stars!!!

You'd be surprised how much tender themed and acoustic stuff I have done and posted up over the years mate. I think the "shred" image stays cause that's when I get pissed at people lazilly labelling me because they don't know any better. And I have a hissy fit over it.

Indeed, I like to think im more than a shredhead and I like it even more when others see that in me too, I barely even consider myself a shredhead really. I like ballads too much, was raised on lashings of the best ones, I like bluesy or older RnB (Ray Charles) stuff too much and I like pop (Beatles, Jacko etc) too much.

Thing is, this is a guitar site just as G101 before it was. And I was part of both sites during a big growing period for me on the instrument. I was building chops to a point where I got happy with my playing so that I could use them the way I wanted and not let them use me, you know ?. Suffice to say I love rippin up some guitar, though it gets increasingly more about the notes and the flurrishes and how they go together, more so than it is about how many notes and how many flourishes are played as quickly as possible.

So don't worry my man, im not gonna waste whatever humble musical talent I have on doing naught but shredding. Frankly im just delighted you have been wise enough to see im not just a little kiddy shreddler hehe!. Thankyou mate.

[Danny appologises for ranting about himself, he fears his ego must look huge right now, but begs the reader to believe he simply wanted to try and explain some stuff to a pal. Now he fears that he looks even more arrogant as he begins to talk about himself in the third fucking person.]

Shit I just saw this, more sweet and lovely sentiments. Thanks alot JP, I really appreciate it. Any compliments on vocals are more than welcome but from yet another hyper-talented vocalist (GEORDIE previously in the thread lol) it's just that bit sweeter. Thankyou mate.

Arty, you gotta listen to some Jeff Buckley. When 'Mojo Pin' came out on his 'Grace' album in 1992, he was being feted as the new Zeppelin all by himself. The guy was a consumate guitarist and an amazing vocalist and Mojo Pin said everything about him. I'll put it up in Fileshare...check it out. Sorry to hijack your thread Danny.

LOL!!! No this is sublime and beautiful. You really can sing Danny and there are even hints of a higher register in you - something you had vigorously denied :)

The vocal is beautifully recorded too - this is by far your best cover in terms of performance and clarity of mix. And vox through a guitar amp? Very nice and lovely compression.

Mixing this ain't hard mate. Simple backing from the "Jam" function of www.all-guitar-chords.com and then the vox. No mixing required really . Higher register... maybe when it's in the right zone sure, it's a struggle any other time .

I have never heard this originally or know anything about the song, but I can tell you I can hear the quality job you put into it. Your vocals...excellent! Your mix may be a little off on my speakers..but I am certainly no expert... but this has feel that transends that. You could have sang it through a brick wall and it hits the mark!

Very enjoyable! You sound so confident and relaxed. Very well done Danny!

Was a test really Serg my man, I did a cool little backer on the all-guitar-chords jam function. It sounds more like MIDI Piano more than anything else haha. But a vocal test was what it was and if they came accross nicely then that's great news.
