I bought a SATA 300 gig maxtor HDD with a 16MB cache and it is crawling. It is so slow it freezes the system. I used speedfan and looked at the properties and got this

Warning: Ultra DMA CRC Error Rate is below the average limits (199-199).

NOTE : your hard disk Ultra DMA CRC Error Rate attribute current value (1) is below the normal range (199 - 199) reported for your specific hard disk model. This usually means that some communication errors occurred between the hard disk and the external controller. Most likely those errors are due to the cable. Double check it, reroute it and, if needed, replace it.

Now I have changed the cable but I still get the error. any ideas??

And yes I know maxtor are cack :)

Hope this helps.

I usually make sure the latest firmware is installed for the sata drives, motherboard, etc. I also make sure the highest mode is set in the bios for DMA.
If you have no luck by Monday let me know, my colleague is a Wintel guru...I am but a lowly Unix guy :o

Have you installed the correct and latest SATA drivers for your mainboard , or maybe you could check out the latest firmware or do a bios upgrade . And i dont think Maxtor are crap , i have used them for years and i aint had one go down on me yet .

It's 8:11. The crew will be in shortly and I'll ask the Wintel guys what they think the resolution to your problem may be based on the information in your post.

Could be the motherboard. If you have an older mobo, it may not support the size hdd you are trying to connect. Both have stated that since you tried another cable and are still getting the problem, chances are the drive is either not supported and/or you mobo may need to have the bios flashed to the latest version to support the drive. Sorry if this isn't helpful for you, Porty.
