View Full Version : Prayer-Laurie and Bearman007 [for Linda]
Bearman007

We've had this song in the works for while, finally got it finished. Thought we'd dedicate it to Linda after reading some posts saying she wasn't feeling well. Haven't had much spare time the last few weeks and are still getting caught up. We hope you are getting better Linda, and thought you might like this song. It's called Prayer from the Norwegian duo Secret Garden, and it's a song Laurie has been after me to do for a long time. No midi or backer available on this one, so I did it from scratch using Edirol Orchestral [thanks KACR!] for the piano, strings, flute, etc. I was even able to create Uilleann Pipes in the edit mode by modifying a clarinet setting, pretty cool! I used Edirol Super Quartet for the acoustic upright bass. Laurie and I did the vocals. As always, comments and critiques welcome.

:jawdrop::jawdrop::jawdrop::jawdrop: That was absolutley amazing! I've never heard the original but I reckon it can't be any better than wot I'm hearing here. The quality, depth and harmonizing of the vocals is immense. This reminded me a hell of a lot of Clannad who were huge back in the 80's. Big 5*****'s :thumb:

Thanks Slicer, Unraveled, Sky1962, Eamon!! Wan't sure if people would give this much of a listen, so I'm pleasantly surprised. Laurie's voice has cleared up some and hopefully we can do some other songs we've had on hold.
Slicer: We've got My Immortal on our list, Laurie has wanted to do that one for quite some time.
Unraveled: We love Clannad! Always wanted to tackle some of their music, will go back and haul our our CD's, have several. Nightnoise & Anuna also. Anuna does the choral vocals on Secret Garden's recording of Prayer.
Sky: Will go back and check out "All About Eve", don't know if I've heard them, sounds interesting.
Eamon7: Laurie is an ANGEL :-), and thanks for listening, means a lot coming from all of you.

Well that was pretty damm phenomenal to my ears, fantastic work on the harmonies in particular. The backer was enough to put me off trying, great work! Clannad / All about eve ( you are gonna love that band btw) for sure. *****

Just beautiful:bowdown:
the vocals are so professional, love the way they are blended in and what a wondrous voice. The quality of the instruments is simply stunning.
Just a beautiful piece of music this, I could listen to this type of music all day long, Linda will absolutely love this.:)

Thanks SteveG, Captain Spasm [Laurie loves that handle],Macman, and 3Fingers!!! Really appreciate your comments, are gratified that you enjoyed it so much. It makes the effort well worth while, and inspires us to look for other projects. Half the fun is sharing on this forum, which has such great people as members and contributors, so much talent here.
I don't think I've gone back and listened to one of our songs as much as I've listened to this one. We loved the original, which features Irish singer Karen Matheson, and Laurie did such a great job on the vocals [mostly one take]. We laid down a lot of tracks for the choir, but it was worth it. Thanks again all!
Yeah!! this was fu-kin' CCooOOOLLLL!!! cover:)

Well guys could i just say that this performance is in my opinion only the best thing ive heard since ive been a member of GB or even the older G101 , thats about 4 or 5 years i think :headscratch: . I know it features no Guitar solos or chuggy rhythms . Instead its something totally different done in a way that creates mass feelings of emotion and thought .
The voice is without doubt up there with the best , and i mean the best . Angelic harmonies pitch perfect and with a tone to die for its just so enjoyable to listen too . Your talents are breath taking , mixing production , everything . Linda is totally flawed by the sounds of it all and thanks you for the heads up .
I think this track should be stickied as a bench mark for us all to adhere too and I know its not rock n roll but sometimes something comes along that makes you down tools stop and re-think your battle plans . This track is one of them .

Well just reading all these lovely comments while listening and have to agree with everyones thoughts on this , a beautiful song for sure and beautifully peformed by you both , it does sound alot like Clannad aswell vocal/harmonies wise but Laurie's voice reminds me alittle of Loreena Mckennitt's aswell , its probably the celtic feel of the song :)
Beautiful cover , 5 stars :)

Thanks Canyoncarver!! We used the original as a template but put our own little spins on it here and there. Laurie's voice was a perfect fit for it, and a little different than what she normally does.

Thanks Bahamut!! We're from the states but love Celtic music, big big fans of Loreena Mckennitt. Have several of her cds. Enya is another singer we enjoy. I have a backer done for Orinoco Flow, haven't gotten to the vocals yet. I found a pretty good midi of it and tweaked it, used Edirol Orchestral for the sounds.
Thanks again for all of the nice comments, we're very pleasantly surprised that so many people actually gave it a listen.

What can I add to what's already been said? Pure quality in vocals, harmonies, and production... and That Edirol VST is WICKED. It's great that it doesn't have to be guitar-based at guitarblast to be appreciated. And I really appreciated this!!

Thanks HansHolz! This is the first song we've posted that didn't have guitar in it of some type. I'm not much of a keyboardist, but I have a $99 M-Audio Keystation 49 midi controller that seems to do the job. I know the keyboard having been a music major in college, but never was really a player. Midi makes is easier though, don't have to get it right the first time:woot:
Loved it!
Thanks TFA!! Just got Laurie signed up here as NightAngel so she can post, reply, etc.

your vocal talent is on par with eva cassidy in my book.

I held my baby girl in my arms while listening to this - a perfect lullably. Definitely catch the Clannad and Anuna (didn't they do Bluebird?) similarities. Would be cool to hear Laurie's take on Enya too. This would have been a great a capella piece, just for the choral harmonies, but the Edirol orchestra is a perfect complement. Brilliant recoring and impeccable performance.
Very stellar indeed!!! beautifully done you two. laurie, you have a very lovely tone, and killer control....i really love how you get that little, for lack of a better term, "strained" quality on the in and out of certain notes....wether it's by choice or not, it really adds to the emotion of the lyric for me!! And Bear...whats to say bro, you are a true master at building these tracks. All the sounds and mix are fantastic.....like a real orchestra was there!!! And really well done vocals too!!!! Great, great performance guy's!!!  :thumb:

Awww, thanks Joe! Your baby girl is a little doll, hope all is well!! Give her a a hug and a kiss for us  Hope you're getting some sleep, I know she is a little night owl. Thanks for the comments, Laurie will be pleased.

Thanks JPF! Laurie was emulating some of Karen Matheson's style and phrasing on this song, so I'm guessing that's what you're hearing? Laurie sounds great just being herself, but it is such a tender song, she wanted to make sure she captured the feeling. Not sure about being a master building tracks, but I'll take a compliment anytime I can get it:thumb: This was a fun project and a great learning experience. I didn't have my guitar to fall back on, so having to do everything on the keyboard was fun and challenging.

That's a very beautiful and pro sounding track! Kickass job you two!
Wow, just wow! Almost brings tears to your eyes, it is so tender. I can hear this playing in the lobby of heaven while the good souls wait to pass through the pearly gates. :) Very angelic and heavenly indeed. I also get the Enya/Clannad vibe from this, as has been mentioned a few times. Laurie, you would do a fantastic job at covering some Enya tunes. I still listen to you guys' "Over the Hills and Far Away" cover and it gives me the goosebumps, as does this one. Bearman, excellent job on the music programming. I know that Edirol can work some magic on recreating the sounds, but it only works its magic on well programmed music. This sounds like real musicins playing! Top quality work. :thumb:

Thanks KCAR, I owe it all to you for making the program available :yourock: Laurie had wanted to do this song for sometime, and when I loaded up the plug-in and started messing with it, I was blown away and knew it was exactly what I needed. I was surprised when I edited the bass clarinet setting and got a pretty decent Uilleann Pipes sound out of it. Laurie had made it clear in no uncertain terms that she wanted that in there at the end of the song....so glad I figured that one out!! You're the man!!

Thanks man, you are being way too kind though. :) I merely uploaded a plugin. But you made it sing like a songbird. You make a good point though about manipulating the sounds. That is what i really love about Edirol Orchestral is that it is really super-simple to use and learn, but if you wanted to go deeper into manipulating sounds, it has the capabilities to provide major tweakitude. It is probably the best VSTi that I have and I use it on almost every single project I work on. It is a one-stop-shop for all things orchestra instruments! Sometimes, I will open up MIDI files of heavy metal tunes and re-assign the sound to orchestra instrument and I will stay up 'til 1 or 2 in the morning because it is so fun to play "conductor." :)
Anyway, glad to know you are liking it and putting it to such excellent use. Please continue to share your cool projects with us!
