Behind every great guitar is a great Bass
Here is a pic of my new bass it's a Fender 61 P Bass Ash body with Rock Maple fret board.I just love trhe sound of the P bass always been my favorite. The neck is a little large...but that just makes you work and try harder.

I don't primarily consider myself a bass player, but I like to record with my own bass when I can. I noticed that many of my favorite bassists - Chris Squire, Geddy Lee, Mike Rutherford, Roger Glover, Lemmy ... even Paul McCartney - all seemed to play Rickenbackers for at least one point in their careers if not for most of them. Liked black the best, so about 15-20 years ago, I had a friend in LA watch the swappers for a used 4001 to see if one of these ever got listed at a decent price. It did.

The Ricks have a distinctive, aggressive sound, which I like, but they're surprisingly versatile too.

Here's my monstrosity! About three years ago when I was deciding to teach guitar full-time, the guys who I went on a franchise said, 'you can teach bass also'. I replied 'I don't play bass!!!'. They said learn!!!! So I taught the bass course while learning it myself and I bought this off eBay for £67.00. The company who make it (Wesley) have 100's of cheap guitars on eBay all the time and some I've tried have been like planks. But this thing is so good I just got lucky I guess. It's got active pups and the neck scale is tiny. It's still got the same strings on it came with!!! Tho I'm always looking at guitars to buy, I don't think about having an expensive bass but if I did I'd probably go for a Warwick.

Hey KSDB
Thats a beaut! Perfect color for that model.
I have always admired people who could tame a Rick and make it sound so good...people like my favorite Bass player Geddy Lee, he still pulls it out in concert and it still cuts like no other Bass i have ever heard.
Man your shoulder must hurt though they are HEAVY!. I played one once and could not belive its weight , its the Les paul of basses.:thumb:
Hey do you mind me asking what they go for these days?.

Hello Wah wah.
Like the look of that bass it looks easy to play and form fitting. How do the active pup's sound i have never heard or played a bass that had them in.I have also seen those guitars on ebay(wesley)..but have never seen that particular one before.

Its kind of neat to see other's basses i think every guitar player should have one.Makes you appreciate the the driving force of the band.

I think the tailpiece is made of brass and it's a huge block, which is what makes it so heavy. Most of the time I play mine, I'm sitting at the computer, so weight isn't really an issue. Also, I'm used to playing a Les Paul, which is also heavy. As far as what the Ricks currently sell for, I'm not sure. I paid $400 for mine, but that was around 1989 or 1990, I believe.

Here's mine. Some Epi 5-string, all active....don't know the model or nothing. Just a bass i saw one day at Sam Ash, thought it looked kinda cool, needed one for messing with, and bought it!!...havn't used it yet on anything myself ( i screwed up the wiring, gotta have it fixed) but Supercharged has used it on a couple of his tunes here (can't remember which?:tard: ) I liked it cuase it has a real narrow neck for a 5...real easy to play. Really dig that Ricky Joe...have two buddy's that each have them....one red, the other blue...

Aww go on then I'll post them AGAIN!
1st my Squier Precision Special, I bought it new two years ago for £169, it plays absolutely fine, the only thing I can't get away with is the white scratchplate & the Jazz pick up, it sounds foul...its always turned off. Love the jazz neck though, all Precisions should have them!
2nd My Epiphone Thunderbird IV. Always dreamed of owning a T since around '78 when Pete Way started using one. I bought this around 10 years ago, it is one of the first Epi imports of this model, it's a powerhouse! I moved the strap button from the top bough to behind the neck, that sorted the famous neck dive problem.

I used to borrow a Rick around 20 years ago (a 4001) I didn't find it heavy or awkward to play. I've read that their gigging life is pretty short and that the finger boards have a tendency to peel away from the neck due to the two truss rod config. Dunno if that's the with the later 4003's.

Nice stable of pony's Leftbase.
Its a rare find to see someone who is a devout bassplayer and not just a guitar player posing as a bass player!.
In My lifetime i have only played with 2 really good honest bass players, the others were just filling in.
most of the time i have found that the best bass players used to play drum's at one time or another is that your case as well?.

Those are some sweet basses you guys have. That lefty trio is something else! My brother-in-law plays upright bass in a bluegrass band, but at one time he a fretless Fender P-bass that was sweet as hell. Should have tried to wrangle that one from him; not sure if he still has it.

All right, here's my Jazz Bass. It's not a Fender, but a "Falcon", written in the same font as the fender logo

It was cheap, and it plays pretty good. Sounds decent. Works for my home recordings at least. And it's alot more fun to play a real bass than to program midi.

Hello Naifuzan
By the way what does "Naifuzan" stand for? every time i see it i wonder.

That would sure pass for a Fender Jazz bass even the finish looks well done on it.The Jazz Bass still has the nicest neck on it imho easy to play and great action .I have a Fender Squire P bass that has a Jazz Bass neck on it, just like Unravelled posted and it is actually nicer than the new P bass neck that i posted at the start of this thread.

Hehe, it's an old nickname I started using when I was a part of the online sumo fan community. I used to follow sumo wrestling and bet on the matches online. It's a great sport. Very underestimated by westeners that don't understand it.
And when you're in the sumo fan community you have to have a japanese sounding nickname. A "shikona". I had a friend who chose the shikona "Kyukenzan", wich means to kill (zan) with bow (kyu) and sword (ken). So I thought it would be fun to take the same zan in my nickname, but naifu instead, wich of course means knife. So basically Naifuzan means "to kill with a knife" :toothless:

cool story.
how in the world does a guy in Sweeden get into sumo wrestling.I guess i will have to check it out sometime.Had you pegged as a Hockey fan seeing as so many great players come from Sweeden.( allot of good Sweedish Players in the NHL)
With a nickname like that you should do a version of "Cuts like a knife" by Bryan Adams, it could be your theme song.

Thanks Parker

Do you DI it right into the board or do you have an amp and mic setup. Thanks for posting your pic.

Hey i dont want to get Paranormal here but....take a looky at the bright orb just to the right of my Red Special guitar head stock framed against my amps grill cloth.I just noticed it and on the blow up it appears not to be dust or a reflection but seems to have a purple blue hue to it?.

Dean makes nice guitars so the bass must play well to.I use a preamp 12AX7 tube powered unit and man does it make a diference in the bass's overall sound when plugged into an amp.I think it is made by PreSonus i should post it on here. The cost runs around $149 but can also be used with Guitar,Vocal,Synth, and bass you might want to try one if running through an amp.

I wasn't really thrilled with the quality of construction when I received it, the knobs weren't level to each other, the jack kept coming loose and the intonation was off, BUT seeing as how I am a little anally rententive all the problems were fixed in short order.

Well i can see the intonation being off these guitars travel through allot of different climates on the way to the music store. But that seems odd a Company like Dean would miss those other details.Where was it manufatured in the USA or was it offshore?.:chucks: in NunChuckLand

It was made in the land of kimchi.

Korea for those that didn't follow me on that one.

The still should have set it better, in their defense the intonation read fine on the GNX3000's tuner, it was the Peterson Strobe Tuner that told me it was off.
