His girlfriend told police that they had been arguing about the upbringing of their son and which gang he should belong to. The teen mother, who is black, is a member of the Crips. Manzanares is Hispanic and belongs to the Westside Ballers gang, the woman said.

Tough answer. Which of them have the best deal on insurance? Which of them will really take good care of the monthly payments for tatoos & piercings? Would I have to buy my son some new outfit for this or that ´school´ every year? A bunch of questions raise to mind. Mothers care, I tell you.

I'm with Uke, I've heard that the Crips have better benefits, and a nice retirement is possible if you make it into your 20's. But then again, the Westside Ballers do have casual Fridays, where you don't have to wear your tats or colors.

I agree with every comment on this post. What a crazed world we live in.
I think both parents (as the movie Scarface Quotes: "Why don't you try sticking your head up your ass and see if it fits.") That is wacked to the 10th power...and sad to read.

Being a mother herself, who obviously cares about her children, I think she was going with the original definition.................

I agree.
And yet, if the fight had been about which religion to raise the kid in, we'd be more understanding, right? I mean, not about the fight itself...but we'd understand what caused it.
But then, if the fight had been about which political alignment to raise the kid in, again we'd think that was insane, right?
Is there a legitimate difference between these three things though?
We could say violence is a difference maybe. But then again, both religious and political differences can be, or cause, violence. In fact, religious differences are natorious for it. We might also see that unless the child was deemed an *active* member of a gang, it's really nothing more than a group identity being imposed on the child and perhaps carries with it some protection and community in an otherwise harsh environment.
So I'm having trouble seeing a difference here. No, that doesn't mean I think it's right...it means I think there's more wrong than we're perhaps willing to recognize.

I hope i don't sound like an ass here.
Why is this news then? You could apply the same scenario to anything with just as much relevance. The difference here is that they AREN'T doing anything to help that kid have a shot at something bigger in life other than chumming with a bunch of fuck-ups like his parents. This isn't an argument over which school he's going to attend to better his education and have a safe and comfortable future. Instead, he'll get a gun and make sure the rest of us have to walk around with eyes in the backs of our heads. Some parents buy their kids a go-kart, guitar, drums, ice skates, put them in baseball etc... This kid will have a gun by 8 years old. You don't see a difference?

I don't really have time to give a well thought out reply. I was going to last night but I got caught up in other debates.
The problem I see here, the one underlying everything, is the labeling of a child before they can make a choice on their own. The fact that this kid is going to grow up in the environment that they are going to pretty much assures the fate you speak of anyway. There are many that get out, but most turn to one gang or another and end up being criminals. What really bothers me at least about what these parents are doing is that they are trying to make that decision for the child.
In this respect I don't see it different than calling a child Christian, or Jewish, or Muslim. Further, in many cases and environments there's really no difference at all between picking out a child's religion for them...and picking which gang they will be a member of.
The other things you speak of, the other comparisons you make, I don't think exhibit this problem...that of labeling a child to belong to a particular group of people. The only real label that educating them puts on them is "educated". This isn't really something that creates a break between one group and another though. Same with go-carts, guitars, etc... I'm sure you could still work the comparison in some way, but it would be a real stretch and would, I think, miss the point.
