After the sucess of Marts single coils the last couple of weeks, i thought i'd try my hand at winding a Humbucker.
I wanted something that was bright, smooth and didn't just blend into a muffled sound like alot of high output PUs seem to, so i did my research and came up with a rough idea of what it needed to be made like, and went from there.
Working off some of the development Mart had already devised, i made a Mark 2 hand winder, which i must say works better then i could of dreamed, both coils wound perfectly, and look just like a bought one, and i'm really pleased with how it sounds too.
There is a pic below, as you can probably see its currently on test in Marts Ibanez S, and i've also recorded some samples too, don't take to much notice of my playing though, i've not picked up the guitar lately :tard: , but even so, i liked the sound i was getting, more so then the Dimarzio that was previously installed tbh, i've not potted it yet, so its still a touch noisy, but not so bad either.

Anyhow, thanks for taking a look :)

I have always wanted to try this but didn't want to buy a complete winding machine. Is there a thread on how to do this on this site?.Or can you give me any info on how to build a MarkII as mentioned earlier.

Thanks Parker

lol, there isn't much competing between us these days, but who knows, it might be something we go into, Mart could do the Single Coils, i could do the Humbuckers :) , i guess its largely dependant on wheather we make anything of interest to anyone.

Thank you all for the kind comments too, and i'll try to get back to some of your questions when i have abit more time.

OK,....now!,...The question!?? If I wanted to buy one of these from you,..what would ya charge me? The other question is,..If I put one in my Strat,..and when switching between pickups..(going from your humbucker say to the middle position) Would I hear a big difference in volume? This is where I would like to see a humbucker that has the same or just a tad of the same volume between a humbucker and a single coil. If yours is wound for less output,..then I'll take one! Very nice tone man,..focused! I don't know man,..it's seems the less output pickups have,..the better they sound....IMO!

The first thing I thought was funny is wind a pickup and put it in your brothers guitar...:) Good plan! ;) But it sounds fantastic!!! I am not one for ceramics or high output pickups. I will always be an Alnico fan for various reasons, but the range of tones, overtones, and clarity, definition here is awesome, so if you did manage to rig this with ceramics...let me mail you mine from a guitar with ceramics I hate the tone of and get me this tone!!!

Wonderfull!!! ...and yes details please!!

Well its an Alnico powered pickup, i too don't really care for ceramic made pickups, and the other bit of magic is in the coils.
I first tested it on my old Marathon Floyd Rose guitar, which even on that heap of crap, it sounded really nice on, but to give it a proper test it really needed to be installed either on my Av-1, which would then require a string change, or pop it in the Ibanez with the trem dipped, which was what we then did.
Mart was also keen to hear what it sounded like on the Ibanez, as the bridge pickup that was on there, had a great output and power, but not half as much clarity on the notes, which is something we both hate.
So for now its on test in the Ibanez, until potting, then it will probably in the Ibanez alittle longer, then over into my Av-1 perminetly.

On the design side of things, i don't want to go into to much detail, as i've poured alot of my own ideas and research into making it sound like it does, and setting up the construction/winding methods, and its something both Mart and myself are looking at in more detail for producing our own pickups.

On the output side of things, its extremely hard to know what the actual output is compaired to other pickups (its something i'm working on), but it feels alot like a medium power pickup, along the same kinda power as a Dimarzio Fred, maybe a touch hotter, more focused and obviously differently balanced.
The difference in volume between the humbucker and a single coil is always hard to match up perfectly, but its definately not out of the question, it just depends alot on the pickups you already have installed.

As for price, its hard to know at this stage, we've got to do our sums first, but certainly no more expensive then a Dimarzio i would say.

Thanks for all the very kind comments, and i hope this answers some of your questions :)
