Hi guys, here is an original i've been working on the last week, i've not been exactly enjoying music lately, or covers atleast, so i turned my attention to some writing, which i must say i had quite abit of fun on for the first time in a while.
The song is based around some cool little keyboard riffs which i was fiddling with, then came the drums which were programmed from scratch, and add a large part of the groove to the song.
I then worked on the bass (everything other then the drums were played live by myself), i can't tell you how much i feel that added to the process of making the song, and i really love what it adds to it.
Finally came the guitars, in places there are 7 tracks of guitars alone, all were recorded on the Ibanez S via my Pod X3L Satch JSX patch (with small variations), and i took alot of care in the mixing/mastering stage to try and keep them as seperate from each other as possible, along with keeping the keyboards, bass and drums well in the mix too.
Anyhow, i could go on quite abit about this one (its nice to be excited about a song again), but i'll leave you with the song, its called "The Phantom Groove", hope you like it, and thanks for taking a listen :thumb:

Thanks Mark, i'm glad you liked it :)
The whole song has Satch vibe to it, it started out abit more towards Engines Of Creation, but as i started laying down the guitars i started leaning more towards how Joe performed those kinda tracks on tour, abit more guitar based, there is alot of me in there though, and my other influences.

On the other side of things, it was just very nice to be enjoying what i do again, when i started out making BTs, it was always with the aim to learn what i needed to apply to my own songs later on, i guess i got abit side tracked along the way, but who knows, maybe i'll spend abit more time working on my own ideas for a while and see if i keep enjoying that.

Thanks again mate :thumb:

Thanks Jim, glad you enjoyed it :)
Joe's style of playing lent itself to what i had in mind for large parts of the song, plus there are quite a few things that i've adopted into my own playing style which i've learnt off Joe, even as i was recording it i could feel that kinda vibe coming through quite strongly, so i rolled with it :)

I'm not sure i've dug myself quite out of he rut yet, i'll see how my next project go's, but i feel its a big step in the right direction, i hope you can find that in your music too Jim, you're far more talented then you ever give yourself credit for, and i hope you find what you're looking for to get that inspiration back :thumb:
Thanks again mate :yourock:

Great tune! I really enjoyed this one, and I rarely enjoy guitar instrumentals that much nowadays :dunno:
But this was just a really nice listen. Well done!

Thanks Naif, glad you liked it :)
I'd like to do a song(s) with vocals in the future, but with my voice, chances are i'd have to write it for someone else to sing, besides, i'm not the most lyrical person you'll meet by any stretch, but its definately something i'd like to do.
Thanks again mate :thumb:

Weird, I am sure I just commented on this one but it,s not there :tard: Agree with Naif basically, bit tired of instrumentals but loved this one. Fine playing and a great mix too, all them many layers all coming through clear as a bell. Great that you played all the instruments too, when are you getting a drumkit? 5 stars from me!!

Beautifully-played, epic freakfest... Love the harmonisers. And all the moans, wheeps and whistles. You got your groove on!!

Hey Jam, well this is a lovely piece of original work my friend. I always love hearing tunes that start off with a single track and build into a complex composition which this one does. Loved all the synth work and rhythms and the guitar lines you put over them, and it has that hauntiing chorus section, great name for the song. The guitar tones were excellent along with the different textures you got out of them. All in all a very enjoyable creative piece which has taken its rightful place on my iPod  Top marks from me mate.

That was a nice tune there mate, Loved the toned and playing. I found the piece easy to listen to (which is what I need at the moment), melodic and wanting to play it again when finished. Top marks *****

Superb & lovely playing!..I feel the same as you..you do feel better when you actually do something original for a change..I've started down the path of "Originalness!"...I tried to do a cover the other week but got instantly bored with it!....Doing your own stuff becomes an extension of yourself rather than a clone of somebody..this is ace!..lets have more! 5 from me

What a great original piece!! You can tell the Satch influence but as i said truly original. The panning nuances were superb and probably needed to be with so much going on, you got it down brilliantly! The tone and playing were excellent and you must have a ton of patience to record all these parts. Fantastic 5 stars!!

Thanks mate, glad you enjoyed it :)
The panning was key to keeping things as seperate as possible, and the settings too, no reverb on any of the guitars to keep them narrow, and all rhythm guitars with only a touch of digital delay, over my lead tones stereo delay, which adds quite alot of width to the sound, but if it was left on all guitars it would make it extremely crowded lol.
Adobe Audition has helped so much with my mixing these days, even though i don't record in it, i always export all my wavs out so i can mix them exactly how i want in Adobe, and there are so many tools in there that can aid in keeping things clear, and hopefully well mixed :)
Thanks again everyone :yourock:

Sounds excellent Jam , all the instruments sound great along with some excellent use of the panning on the guitars , it does sound a hell of alot like something that has come from Joe Satriani's camp , although i know you enjoy building layers up both guitar and instrument wise , the thing that impress's me the most apart from the song itself sounding fantastic is the way you have adapted to playing the bass guitar, sounds like you have been playing for years on one and it definetly adds to the twist of things in the middle when it changes about , anyway fantastic cover, 5 stars :)

Thanks Mart, the bass is something i've quickly grown to love, it really adds something unique to the any performence, and it came in extremely handy while writing this, as i could experiment with ideas as i was going along, and it definately changed the feel throughout, especially on the chorus.

Big thanks again to everyone who's listened :yourock:

A tune which wouldn't sound outa place inside CSI Miami . Like when they dig into the corpse and pull out the bullet . Interesting stuff with lots of data appearing and moving on . Cool .

Enjoyable listen . Would love to see it for fun behind a you tube type movie file :) .

Thanks Blues, a little know fact (probably even to John and Justin who also starred in it), our original collab of Rockin' In A Free World that John, Justin, Mart and myself did many many moons ago was used on a movie a friend of mine made for a SWG (Star Wars Galaxies) Battle video.
It probably never made it to Youtube, but it did a long run on the forums there, and it was pretty cool to have it one something like that, especially back then when i was practically starting out on the other areas on music.

Thanks again everyone :)

I thought this was great - hard to blend LFO's and guitarwork and you did it in a musical and interesting way.

Enjoyed this, it also really captured the ambience of the song name too 'phantom groove'. thanks

Cheers Robbie, it was great fun to do, i've spent a hell of alot of time learning my trade really, and althought i've written quite a few songs, this is the first one that really came together to a complete song, for me atleast anyhow.
Some ideas take alot of work, this one flowed from the moment i got my opening riff, and thats how i love to write, there was still alot of work, but it was a natural process, very enjoyable to do, and its easily the best song i've written.

There are alot of other ideas i'm looking at, but i might try a cover again soon, then come back to a few bits and pieces i have in mind, time permitting anyhow, but i'm really glad i got the chance to do this, hopefully i'll get a chance to make an albums worth :)

Thanks again everyone, really appreciate it :yourock:
