watch out, or I'll post Baby Wants Fire (again!) :tard:
Do it Capt'n, I for one have not heard it :thumb:
Here ye go matey!
"Baby Wants Fire" - recorded 1983, same studio as Unraveled and Lippy (Steve Dagget's "Important" Studio" in Gosforth, Newcastle Upon Tyne).
The most criminally simple riff, but what a rabble-rouser it was (due chiefly to Gill's awesome 76' Re-issue Explorer/MXR Micro-amp/JMP 50W M/V tone)
Followed closely by "Runnin'" ... a much more laid-back tune... plus we'd borrowed Mike Bowes on keyboards who was with Leftbass' (and later Lippy's) band "Ivory Tower" .. this one from 1985.
This one was recorded at Fairview studios near Hull ... engineered and produced by Roy Neave ... the same guy and studio who recorded Def Leppard's first EP back in the mists of time ....
Just ran them both through BBE Sonic Maximiser in Cubase, to brighten 'em up a tad ... the old tape versions are a bit dull.
:D
Any more for any more, fellow smoggies?

Really enjoyed listening to these Cap!!! The runnin track has definately got the Def Leppard sort of vibe to it. Having not discovered guitar music until the 90's this stuff is great for me to listen to. Proper stuff!! Cheers for posting John.:thumb:

Sounds great, quality pretty damm good for an old tape and the songs stand well too. There are a few tapes in existence of my old band from back then, but I don't have them and you would not want to hear anyway  Thanks for (Re) Posting :thumb:

Lost touch with the other guys years back. I moved away from the area, lead guitarist buggered off to Saudi. Bass player discovered alcohol in a big way!! Drummer discovered God which was even worse..... We are only talking a ghetto blaster in the middle of our practice room anyway. Will post if I ever get them, but dont hold your breath.

Cool . Running is my favorite . It has that Dimmer Blackwell reverb , and a Marty Day ish drummer . Uncanny resemblance .
The lead on running is quite good . Ilike the metallic edge on the riff fading out .

Hey Captain
That was a great blast from your past. Both these tunes had great commercial appeal for the time "Runnin" would have caught my ear for sure if i was record executive in the 80's and baby wants fire had all the ear marks of Def Lep kindda groove.
I am amazed at the quality of the recording and the overall composition of these songs you guys did as basically kids!. This was light years ahead of any band i was playing in in 83 even the harmonies were well done.I liked the structure of the solo in Runnin it wasn't hurried or overplayed.Cant belive i missed this post the first time around....thanks to Lippy for pointing me in the right direction.
Thanks again for posting this Capatain this type of music reminds me of great times in the 80's that will never be repeated.:)

Wow John, this is proper 80's music. This kinda stuff was what turned my head from keyboards to guitar (although I would have killed to be the keyboardist in a band like this!). Great playing also...I'm so glad I spent my teens in the 80's!.You smoggies certainly lived the rock star life of gigging and recording in a studio, must have been great experience and a lot of fun!.
Ya lucky buggers....:) Top stuff guys.

Cheers Park. I was always quite proud of this one. Even though I'm never the most technically accomplished guitarist, I always tried to get melody ... some kind of "singable" quality ... into my lead playing. I think this is one of those rare few that I got closest with.

Great songs..I dunno how at least 4 of the bands we had then never got signed to major labels especially this band!..but for most bands it was all about "Location,Location, Location!"..because some of the "London" bands at the time were dreadful!...but believe me ..on bands... per foot of area.....we musta had some bloody talent around here!..Excellent stuff!

First of all may i congratulate John for the amazing skill of being able to raise the dead lol.Looking back on it though Teesside was probably one of the major producers of this type of rock anywhere but never got the recognition or the media cverage it deserved,If you actually tallied up the number of bands that had studio recorded realeases in this time and divided it into the area of Teesside you would probably have a release every 1 to 2 miles
If you also list the musicians that went on to international acclaim the list becomes even more incredable
Janick Gers
Paul Rodgers
Dave Coverdale
Pete Trewavas (hope i spelt this right he was the bass player out of Marillion)
Chris Rea
Mick Tucker
Jam Crisp {assistant engineer on Pete Gabrials SO album}
The list goes on and on and let us not forget the also rans these are the guys who never realy got the acclaim thet deserved, people like John,Wah,Lippy,Arty,Bob Henmann,Bardsey,Mala,Simo,Bowsey,Simon Pitt,Baz Youll, Tim Pattison etc I am sorry if i have left anybody out but maybe you can start compiling a list and call it the Teesside roll of honour,I for one would be proud to be on it as for all its faults i am still proud to be a Teessider and wherever i travel and play i always take a little bit with me.

I went to school with Jam Crisp, I knew him very well, he was a drummer back then.
Let's not forget to give a mention to Clune from the excellent local band The Flaming Mussolini's.
He went on to worldwide success as David Gray's drummer, he plays the on the Songs Please Forgive Me, Babylon &
This Years Love, to name a few.

I don't think there's many more to add unless you wanna include the likes of Roy 'Chubby' Brown, Elizabeth Estensen (The Liver Birds, apparently now in Emmerdale) and being really desperate John Walker (Inventor of the friction match.)

..... Wendy Richards (Pauline Fowler/Miss Brahms) .... Helen Worth (Gail Tilsely) ... Chris Quentin (Brian Tilsely) .... Christopher Gibbens .... Jim Moir (Vic Reeves .... well .. ok ... 'es from Darlo') ... Bob Mortimer .... (Durham?)
Any more spring to mind, fellow smoggies?

How about the stockton-Darlington raliway!!
It was the first commercial railway mate, grant you that, but George Stephenson wasn't from Teesside I believe (from further up, either in Northern County Durham, or Northumberland ... I think).
At least John Walker, inventor of the friction match, had his chemist's shop in Stockton (that's why it's "John Walker Square")
