Any opinions? AVG recently discontinued updates and support for V 7.5 (which I liked very much alongside their standalone anti-spyware product. As of 5/31/08, they would like you to "upgrade" to version 8.0, however, I have had problems with this and an XP SP3 machine....let alone Vista which I use. I also do not like "all in one" type products where my AV, AS, or FW is handled by one company. (most emphatically please not Norton)!!!
Anyone have a good recommendation? I was thinking of http://www.free-av.com/
Give me options, opinions...I don't like the new AVG.
Thanks guys. :thumb:

damn!!
AVG 7.5 is a great program
I knew there was version 8.0, and it was shareware, but I thought they would still support vers 7.5
"AVG recently discontinued updates and support for V 7.5"
are you sure, I just went to their website, and I did not see information on their website about that,
not saying I don't believe you, because it is a free service, so of course they want to make money
do you have a link I could read that they will no longer support vers 7.5?
also i just updated the software with no problems

AVG 7.5 support was supposed to end at the end of May.
There is a free version of AVG 8.0, but it's a pain in the ass to find the link, and it only supports free e-mail scanning for 30 days.
I am currently giving Avast a shot. It's okay. It's free. However, it loads the on access scanner by default, and if you stop it, you get the annoying windows red balloon. The virus scan took about half a day to complete on my machine.
So I would like to find something a little lighter and slicker, but I will stick with it for now.
I have tried Comodo as well, but that took ages and kept freezing on my computer.

Who the hell needs AV...stop surfing porn 2.0 websites and downloading warez and you'll be fine...

Your wife and kids don't use your computer then I suspect ?
And stop surfing for porn ? The computer would quickly gather dust and I would never run out of disk space ever again !
And my eyesight would be a damn sight better !

Well i switched over to AVG 8.0 last week, and nps so far, i'm also on XP SP3, my comp is booting a tad slower, but you always expect that (i do atleast anyhow).
I'll probably stick with it til the next time i reformat (which hopefully will be many years away), then i'm going to ditch Zone Alarm, and possibily AVG too for something hopefully faster on both counts.
7.5 going under is a pain though, but i guess they're not that interested in supporting 2 free AVs for updates etc, shame though.

Yeah I've been running AVG 8 for the past two weeks or so, no probs with it here either.

I've been using AVG 8.0 FREE for 2 weeks at home on my Sony laptop running Vista (hence I call it the CrapTop) and also on a Dell P4 desktop running XP Pro SP2, neither are connected to internet ... but under version 7.5 it did catch something I was trying to install (Free To Try). Never will I do any free to try, even though Symantec scan at work found no probs.
I think the startup is slower on both ... my only beef, so far, with AVG Free 8.

I had to check but I'm running 8.0 with no probs either. Comodo wouldn't let me save Excel stuff without getting shitty.

Thanks for the input guys. I have seen the pop-up on 7.5 say it will no longer be supported on my own PC, and yet, I am still downloading updates myself.
I put anti-Vir on a test PC and so far, that is looking good. I just don't like the all in one type programs (firewall, anti-spyware, anti-virus) in one package. Never did. I am strange in my tastes I guess.
There is "chatter" all over Google when you type in "Free AVG 7.5 no longer supported" and perhaps they delayed the end of life date? But I would rather find a good alternative before I find myself forced into 8.0. (I just hate it for subjective reasons).

Just a little heads up to anyone now on 8.0, the resident shield component can be a resource hog, when ever you open anything, even if its on your comp like program files etc, it scans them automatically, along with anything else.
I just opened Add/Remove Programs from the control panel, and AVG grounded it to a holt scanning everything that the program was try to load up to view.
I've now switched it off, and that solves the prob, might be that slowing my boot time too, i'll find out next time i restart.

I caught a screen shot of that elusive message. Read and weep.
So far, I am liking AntiVir. Not like I loved AVG 7.5, but still a good solid free product and not a resource hog.

If you like AVG then just upgrade to the new version after the 25th and spend a little cash. :wtf:
If not, there are other solutions available. Like drugs, pick your poison...

Yes, I would bite the bullet and upgrade to the paid version, but like I said, I hate the new 8.0 AVG and the "all in one" type packages.
There are so many good products out there that are free; Perhaps pay doesn't necessarily mean better protection? Free AVG 7.5 rivaled most of the competition and when considering system drag, it was better than most.
