So metallicas new album is out and up for grabs in the file share section. What do you guys think about it? I've only listened through it once, and I have to say it's not too bad. Didn't have too high expectations, and even if I didnt fall in love with it on first listen I think this album has some potential.
The songs that stood out the most for me on first listen were "the end of the line" and "the unforgiven 3".
Now lemme hear what you think about this album!

Only really given it half a listen at work today.
I liked what I heard today. Definitely a whole lot better than St. Anger, that's for sure. Liked some of the machine gun riffing on ther.
Definitely some great stuff on there. St. Anger just gave me a headache when I listened to it. This one not, it seems like it could be a really strong one.
Will listen to it more in a bit.

I think it kicks ass! I've only listened through it once so far (it's an hour and 14 minutes) but so far I am impressed! IMO, It's not meant for radio... which is a good thing. Guitar solos, faster tempos and 8-10 minute songs are back:rock: And what's that I hear? A decent snare:woot: So far, so good:)

Yeah, turn it down...the walls are shaking here! Not a tallica fan but always willing to give things a go so I'll let you know. As far as the single was concerned I didn't think it was as good as the new Slipknot 'Physcosocial' and never thought I would like this lot either but love the straight riffing of it. :devilchil:

I've listened to it a couple of times and it's not bad, but.....
IMO, Metallica up until the early '90s were awesome and in this time produced some brilliant albums, including one of the landmarks of the metal genre, 'Master Of Puppets'. Riffs bludgeoned your ears and stuck in your head, every song had an identity and purpose in its finely crafted journey and from the moment the needle touched vinyl, you knew you had a Metallica album playing.
'Death Magnetic' is not that Metallica, but then it isn't a 'Load' (of crap) or 'St Anger' either. It's like their revamped old logo - certainly better than their 'alternative' one, but it's not the classic. A lot of the album sounds like new Metallica trying ever so hard to sound like old Metallica without being a straight copy (this gave the whole thing a bit of a Trivium edge to me). Don't get me wrong, there's some brutal riffing (reminiscent of their pre '90s stuff), it's got a thrashier egde to things and there are some good tracks that will no doubt stand out after a few more listenings. Oh, and the guitar solos are back.
However - and I might be being a bit harsh when I say this - I thought it came across a tad hollow and contrived. The songs seem to lack any iconic riffs (something the older stuff has in abundance), some of the solos are a bit aimless, the lyrics have quite a few tired, stock cliches in them and there are moments where direction and purpose appear to be lacking. Having said that, I think it's alright and is definitely a vast improvement on everything post 'Black' album.
After I'd listened to it the second time, I loaded up my 'heavy' playlist, set it to shuffle and hit play. As fate would have it, the first tune it picked was 'Master Of Puppets'. 30 seconds in, and as good as 'Death Magnetic' is, I knew how good it wasn't.
But hey, that's just my opinion. I'm intrigued to find out what others thought of it. :)

Yes. A student gave me a cd of it the day before yesterday. I would not post this if I did not listen to it in the first hand.

It was only leaked yesterday when it was accidentally put on the shelves early in France. Everything before that was a fake.

Depends on what you hear and what you listen to. And when you listen to it. I hope you are not trying to say I am faking what I posted.

Ouch. A half an hour silence is too much. Oh well, thanks for the synthfont tuturial, still have a blast* with it once in a while. :dj:

I had to take my son to work. All I was saying was that I hoped you hadn't listened to the fake album that has been circulating around. Many were fooled by it.

Definitely gets better the second listen.
The only times I have listened to it before today are half a listen at work when I wasn't really paying much attention as it was just to drown the office out whilst I wrote a document and when I was dozing after coming around from anesthetic yesterday.
Today I am focusing more attention to it and liking it a whole lot more.
I think it's really good, but then I got into Metallica at the Black album stage, so didn't have to expect them to live up to their early albums whenever I listened to them. Seems like it's a blessing as the general consensus is that they have never managed to.
I can't comment on whether they do live up to that status, as it's never something that concerns me with any band, let alone this one. I just think it's good, and to my ears, I like it.

I've listened to it a couple of times now. I think it's pretty good. Not even near top 10 best albums release this year so far, tho.
I think their songs are a bit too long, and sorta lose their structure towards the end with endless riffing, wich usually gets pretty boring to me. And the bass is still mixed too low!

Dear sirs,
I think I might be going a bit mad in my old age.
I've just listened to it all again and some of it sounds a bit....dare I say it....MegaDave....sorry, Megadeth!
I'm not saying it stinks of it, but to me, there's more than a hint of a whiff throughout in the riffs, arrangement, vocal nuances, solos, production, etc. Obviously there's some previous on this front, but it always seemed the other way round. Has the tide turned?....Can anyone else here this?.....Or am I just batty? ;)
Yours sincerererely,

Pretty Bad in my opinion. Just listened for the 2nd time in a row.
Its sad. Even more pathetic than my English.
The first thing i noticed when i played the songs was the lenght (and of course an instrumental again after 20 years?)
For me its an exagerated album. Too much of everything in excess. Like they were trying hard to show us they can still be hardbad@ssmetal Gods players. There are 2 guitars unison riffs everywere playing THE SAME...thats lame, they could use something diferent... We all know the "sometimes less is more..." sentence.
It was somehow, an "...and justice for all 2nd chapter". Many complicated time signatures passages. I cant blame them if they were trying to innovate their style once more by emulating their pre 90´s era, but with the singing style of the latest Tallicas albums it was a low point. James Hetfield singing RUINED this album on 50% for me. Its mellow in contrast with the heavy riffage.
Damn,....im sad and angry... I was hoping Metallica could back and teach all of those young teenagers that born under the sad star what metal was about. The whole package. I was hoping they save us from the long 20+ years pop era we are deep into right now. Maybe Its early to say this. They are ICONS of Metal for musicians and simple listeners. Many of us gonna try and lie to ourselves and say "well its good" knowing deep in your heart that they are not gonna be what they were once........:dammit:

I consider myself a metallica fan, as I like alot of their songs,
this album has some cool riffs and stuff, but as a whole the album falls short for me, it's not memorable at all,(the one significant thing they did improve was the sound of drums, so that is a plus)
and based on it not being "memorable", I won't be listening to it as I have too much music I would rather listen too, including other metallica albums.
